Jesus, please, let her be home.

I stared up at the front door to the building. It looked like I was going to have to get buzzed in by someone. I checked the names on the listings, but none of them were Greene. Two weren’t labeled, so I buzzed both of those; neither one answered.

I tried calling her phone again; voicemail. I was getting agitated the longer I stood there. I was just getting ready to start hitting all the buzzers when someone opened the door from the inside, and I slipped in after he walked out. He wasn’t the least bit interested in me. I guess he assumed I looked like a nice guy.

I didn’t feel very nice at that moment. I felt like I could rip a man in two, and if I found Ember with a man, I might just do that. I looked at the mailboxes in the lobby, and found one with her last name on it, apartment 302. There was an elevator, but I’d have to be crazy to want to try it, so I took the stairs two at a time.

Good thing I was a runner, the quick haul up the stairs had been nothing, and I paused outside her door and leaned closer. I could hear music but nothing else. I knocked softly on the door but got no response, so I knocked a little louder—again nothing.

I stared at the doorknob. Should I try it? Or should I just pound on the door? Shit, if I pounded, it might embarrass us both if her neighbors came out. I reached for the handle and found it unlocked.

When I pushed open the door, I stood at the threshold. The music grew louder as the door swung back. Damn, this place was the size of a closet. No wonder she didn’t want me to see it. I stepped inside and glanced around. It might be small, but it was clean. She must have just cleaned because it smelled fresh. I inhaled the citrus scent that reminded me of her hair—and then I froze. Every nerve ending in my body went on alert when I heard a moan come from what I assumed was her bedroom. Son of a bitch! Was she having sex with someone? Well, if so, not for long. I took the five steps to reach her door and came up short. Holy crap!
