She sat next to me. “Walker told me about Ember, and Whit filled in some more blanks.”

I waited for her to give me her opinion. I was hoping she wouldn’t because I really did not have the patience to keep my cool right now.

“I think it’s pretty cool that you are trying to help her.”

“You do?” I hadn’t expected that.

She shrugged, “Yeah, everyone deserves another chance. Maybe she just needs a chance to have someone really care about her so she gets over whatever she’s going through.”

I didn’t know what to say, “Thank you.”

Josey squeezed my hand, “And I know Whit is probably spitting nails, but I also know that even after all these years, you have never once looked at Whit the way you looked at Ember before surgery. It was nice to see that you are capable of loving someone, Colt. You both deserve to be happy.” Josey squeezed my hand again and then kissed my cheek.

I was still speechless when she walked out the door.

Josey’s words vibrated through my head: ‘Capable of loving someone’? I didn’t love Ember. I barely knew her. Yes, I would readily admit that I did care about her, maybe a lot more than I had expected, but I couldn’t love her. We were too different.
