“How long am I going to be here?” I motioned for him to bring my straw closer again, and I sucked as hard as I could until the cup was empty. “More, please.”

“Let’s give that a few minutes to settle in. I don’t want to put too much into your stomach in case you throw up.”

“Fine,” I groaned as I shifted. “So when do I get to go home?”

“Probably late this afternoon. As long as you don’t get a fever, you can leave,” he paused and shifted his jaw back and forth, “but you’re not going home.”

“Excuse me?” Why did I have a feeling this was coming?

“I want you to come to my place for a few days,” he held his hand up when I went to interrupt him, “only a few days, until you can get around. I have a guest bedroom and you can get plenty of rest while someone waits on you hand and foot.”

“Hand and foot, huh?” I took a moment to consider it. Um, hell yeah! But not because I’d have someone to wait on me, but because I knew his home would be much more comfortable than mine, and staying with him for a couple days would give me a chance to get to know him better.

“I’m not sure. You know my place is pretty cozy. I’d hate for the mice to get lonely without me.”

“You have mice?” He cringed, “Never mind, you’re never going back there.”

I began to laugh again and held my hand up, “Stop, don’t make me laugh.”

His grin went straight to my heart, “Then don’t make a joke. Say you’re alright with coming to my place. I just want to make sure you rest for a few days before you try to clean the cobwebs out of the corners.”

“Ah, you saw those, did you?”

“Yeah, while I was waiting for the ambulance, I noticed a few.”

“You don’t mind if I crash at your place for a few days?”

“No, not at all. If I did mind, I wouldn’t have asked you.” He lifted my hand and kissed the back of it.

Colt stayed a little longer, then he went home to take a nap and get the guest room ready. Somehow, I didn’t think there was too much to get ready, but whatever. He’d been practically by my side since he’d found me last night. He deserved whatever time he needed.

My fever stayed away, and because I was going to go home with Colt, the doctor released me. He’d told me that if I’d been going home alone, he would have kept me another night. Thank god Colt had offered for me to convalesce at his place.

Colt surprised me by bringing me a change of clothes. When he’d left my apartment last night, he’d snagged my cellphone and my keys, so he went back and got some clothes and a few things from my bathroom. I stared at him for a long time after he told me what he’d done and fought off the urge to cry. Why was he doing all this?

We were on our way to his place, and instead of a dirty taxi, Colt brought his car to pick me up. I’m not sure why I wanted to know, but I was curious about the woman who had raised such a caring son.

“Where does your mother live?” I was lying back in his passenger seat. The leather felt like butter under my hands, and I stroked it gently with my fingertips.

“About an hour outside the city.” He cleared his throat, “You will actually get a chance to meet her tomorrow.”

I flipped my head his way, “What? You want me to meet your mother? Like this? Oh, no!”

He started laughing and took my hand. “Relax. She’s coming over for lunch. You don’t have to join us, I know you won’t be feeling well, but I’d hoped that maybe you would at least like to say hi.”

“Why?”

“Because if my mom thinks I have a serious girlfriend, she’ll get off my back. Besides, she’s bringing her fiancé, and I’m not crazy about him.”

“Why don’t you like him?”

“He’s a few years older than I am.” He glanced my way and nodded at my expression, “Yep, that’s what I thought.”

“Sorry, never pictured you to have a cougar as a mother.”

“Hey, she’s not a cougar,” he stated brusquely.

“How old is your mom?”
