She threw her arms around me and hugged me tightly. “Thank you so much. I promise you are going to learn to really like Stewart.”

“I hope so, Mom, but if he hurts you, I’m going to hurt him.”

She laughed as she pulled away, “I’m sure you will. Now are you done?”

“Yeah, I just need to grab a few things. Why?”

“Let’s grab a cab together, and you can drop me off at Stewart’s. You can pop in and tell him you’re going to be his best man.”

“Mom, I want to get home. I haven’t spoken to Ember all day. She’s probably worried.”

“Haven’t you called her?”

“I left my cellphone at home and don’t know her cell number. I tried calling the house, but she didn’t answer. She probably thinks I took off on her.”

She laughed, “Nonsense, that woman is crazy about you. I’m sure she’s probably pacing and worried, but she’ll understand if you are a few minutes late.”

On the way to Stewart’s, I finally had the chance to think back to the night before. I couldn’t wait to hold her in my arms again. Maybe she wouldn’t be too sore, and tonight we could make love again, slowly.

“I can see by the smile on your face that you’re thinking about her,” my mother said while we sat in the back seat.

“I am.”

“You really like her, don’t you?”

I turned to her, “I do. She’s a pretty fantastic woman.”

“I think she has the same opinion about you.” She patted my leg.

“Yeah, how would you know that?”

“Call it mother’s intuition.” She winked. “I saw the looks she gave you when we had lunch. She might have just had surgery, but the way she took you in, it was like she was trying to absorb your energy so she could cherish it.”

I laughed at her description, and the taxi stopped at Stewart’s building. “You sure he’s home?”

“Oh, yes, we were supposed to go out to dinner, but he called and said something had come up and he needed to head home.”

“Does he know we’re coming?”

“Nope, but that will just make it better.” She pushed the button for the elevator, and we rose in silence.

My mom pulled a key out of her purse when we got to his floor and unlocked the door. I held it open for her to pass through and then followed her inside. Ten steps in, we both stopped dead in our tracks.

Stewart was standing in the middle of the living room wearing sweatpants that were hanging loose on his hips. Sweat trailed down his bare back, but that’s not what stopped us. What got our attention was Ember lying on the couch wrapped in a robe and staring up at me like she’d just been caught red-handed.

“What the fuck!” I shouted and didn’t know if I should be angry at Stewart or Ember. “Jesus Christ! I go to work and you sleep with Stewart!”

My mom put her hand on my chest to hold me back. “Stewart, can you please tell me what’s going on?” My mom’s voice was the total opposite of mine. She was pure calm.

“Wendy, Colt, this is not what it looks like.”

I looked between the two of them and laughed. “You’ve got to be kidding me. I can’t believe Whitney was right.” I spun on my heel and stalked out of the condo slamming the door.

I heard the door yank open behind me, and Stewart came running out. I turned on him, my hands fisted at my sides, and said, “For my mother’s sake, you better not take another step closer, or I am going to beat the shit out of you.”

“Colt, you need to listen to me. This is not what is seems like.”

“Bullshit! I was so fucking blind!” The elevator door opened, and I stepped in and pushed the first-floor button over and over again. “Stay the fuck away from me.”
