“I will in a little while. I wanted to make sure we had all this cleaned up.”

“I can take care of that.”

“Don’t be silly. It was a whirlwind in here today with everyone. I’ll help get it cleaned up, and then—”

“Then what?”

He glanced around quickly as if he were nervous to say something. I held my tongue, waiting for him to go ahead.

“Well, I was going to ask you if you wanted to come to my parents' house tonight for dinner.”

“That is nice of you, Brad, but I think I might take a long hot shower and call my girls. I also have some papers to grade.”

“Oh.” He nodded, looking a little disappointed.

“Maybe next weekend, if the invitation still stands.”

“Of course.” His smile returned.

For the next hour, we cleaned up, and I made a list of little jobs I could do during the week. One of those jobs was picking out paint for the walls. I hadn’t realized that Cameron and Kayley had done so much spackling. Most of the walls were ready to be painted already, although I wouldn’t do that until the electricity was done in case Pete had to cut into walls.

I looked around my house as I closed windows and turned off lights, and felt this enormous amount of emotion bubble up in my chest that made me blink away tears. I couldn’t believe how much had gotten done today, and I couldn’t wait to see what was accomplished next week.

I was coming down the stairs as I said as much to Brad. “Originally, I was hoping to be sleeping in here already.”

“Better to wait for the plumbing and electrical work to be finished.”

I stopped on the bottom step, and Brad approached me. “Yeah, you’re right.” The two of us locked gazes. “Thank you for everything, Brad.”

“You’re welcome, Nolan. I’m glad I could help.”

We continued to watch one another, and I put my hand on his chest. “May I kiss you, Brad?”

He shuffled forward slightly. “I’d like that, Nolan.”

Brad wrapped me in his strong arms and brought my body to his as our mouths found one another. The kiss was so intense that my toes curled in my sneakers, and I clung to him, not wanting it to end. Within a few seconds, our kisses became more intense, and his hands roamed over my back, one of them cupping my bottom, and I whimpered.

I broke the kiss, leaning my forehead to his. “We need to stop, or I’m going to throw you to the stairs and have my wicked way with you.”

He chuckled slightly. “I’m almost ready for you to do that.”

I lifted my gaze to him. “Almost? You mean if I keep kissing you, you might let me?”

He brushed his lips over my forehead and stepped back, dropping his hands to his sides. “Not today, but you keep it up, and you might wear down my defenses.”

I grinned as I grabbed a fistful of his shirt and yanked him back to me to wrap my arms around his neck. A moment later, I hopped up and wrapped my legs around his waist, and he groaned.

“Nolan, you’re killing me here.”

I began to kiss his neck, coming up to his ear and whispering, “But what a way to die.”

His laughter vibrated through me as I nipped at his earlobe. He moved, shifting our bodies so my back was against the wall, and then he grabbed my face and held it in front of him. I was waiting for him to tell me to stop, to behave, but the look in his eyes said something else entirely different.

His mouth slammed over mine, and I giggled to myself as I realized I had broken through his resistance. Score one for the home team!
