She slammed her fists to her hips. “That’s not what I was going to ask. Besides, if she batted her pretty brown eyes at you, you’d be begging her to let you help.”

I laughed. “I doubt that.” Kayley was quiet for a moment, too quiet. I glanced back to see her eyeing me up. “What?”

“Actually, you might like her.”

“No! Just no!” I growled. “I’m sick and tired of you all trying to set me up with your friends. I am quite happy on my own, thank you.” I went to grab the spackle so that I could start covering the seams and nail holes.

“Whatever, Brad. You know that one of these days, you’re going to meet someone and finally let yourself fall in love again. Cheryl is probably pacing around heaven pissed that you are still single and walking around with your tail between your legs.”

“I am not walking around with my tail between my legs, Kay.” I shook my head at her. “I have a busy life, and I’m not interested in dating right now.”

“Are you interested in sex?”

I turned away from her. Oh, sex I would be interested in having. It had been so long I could join a monastery. “No,” I lied.

“Liar!” She laughed. “I don’t know any man who doesn’t want to have sex.”

“Yeah, well, you know someone now,” I muttered.

Kayley sighed. “Brad, I get that you miss Cheryl, but you gotta let that go. You know that she would want you to be happy. She would want you to find someone to love again.”

I ignored Kayley as I prepared to slather on the spackle.

Kayley came around to my side so she could see my face. “Would it be so bad to be in a relationship?”

“Kay, I will admit that the thought of having sex is nice, but I don’t want to deal with all those women who talk about how hard it might be for me to take care of my children or how they feel so sorry for me because my wife died.”

“Then stop acting sorry for yourself, Bradley. They wouldn’t do that if you didn’t walk around all mopey and sad.”

“I am not mopey,” I replied gruffly.

“Yes, you are. Sometimes I think you are that way so that people stay away from you, but it’s time to stop being a baby and get back out there. I did.”

I laughed. “Yeah, you are so not me, Kay.”

“No, I’m not, but I’m your sister, and I love you. If I can find someone to loveme, then you can find someone to loveyou.”

“It’s not that simple.”

“It’s never simple.”

“I have kids to think about and a business.”

“Do you think that women your age don’t have lives, careers, or baggage that they have to deal with? Wake up, Bradley. You are not the only one with issues. You’re forty. Do you want to spend the next thirty years alone?”

I didn’t respond, and I heard my sister sigh wearily. “I wasn’t going to try and set you up with her or ask you to help her. I was merely going to ask if I could loan her a few tools so that she doesn’t have to buy them all.”

I glanced at her; brow raised. “She’s going to do it herself?”

“Yep, if you thought I was a tomboy, you should see Nolan. She puts me to shame.”

“Nolan?”

“Yes.”

I frowned. “Nolan is a girl?”

Kayley laughed with a shrug. “Yes, and yes, it is an odd name for a girl, but her father wanted a boy.”
