“How much is that going to cost her?”

He glanced at me. “How do you know it’s a she?”

“My sister showed her the house.”

“Damn, your sister got something against the woman?”

I laughed. “Actually, they are friends from New York, where Kayley used to live.”

“You sure they are friends?”

I nodded.

He shook his head. “I’m not sure I would have shown my enemy that house. You met her yet—the new homeowner?”

“No.”

“Dad said she’s cute as a button but stupid as a brick for buying the property. Said a single woman should never have tried to take on that kind of a project.”

“I hope he didn’t call her cute as a button to her face.”

Milton laughed. “Knowing my dad, he probably did.”

I chuckled. “I bet he did. My sister said she’s handy.”

“Handy or not, she’s going to need help. You been over to see the house?”

I shook my head. “Nope, and I told my sister that I was not going to get roped into helping her friend.”

“Yeah, right. You’re a big softy. She told my dad that she is redoing the entire house. Sounds like a good project to help with and right up your alley. Weren’t you just saying the other day how you’d love to do some restoration work?”

I stared at the pile of two-by-fours. “I’m pretty sure I have enough work to do right now.”

“Yeah, but this house won’t take all that long.”

“Long enough for her to hopefully hire someone else.”

He chuckled. “Why are you so set against helping her?”

“Because I’m tired of people volunteering my services. My siblings are forever saying, ‘Oh, yeah, my brother will help you with that,’ and not mentioning that I will charge to do it. I’m not running a free service here. I do have bills to pay.”

“I get it. I know a lot of people are forever trying to talk me into designing their dream bathroom, and then I tell them my fees, and they are like, hmm, maybe later.”

“Glad to hear that I’m not alone.”

“Did you know the lady’s name is Nolan? The woman who bought the Millstone place that is.”

“Yeah, Kayley told me that.”

“What a weird name for a girl.” He shook his head. “But my dad did tell her that I designed custom bathrooms, and I know she wanted to redo the master. It’s in serious need of repair. The wallboard is molded behind the old tile, so the whole thing needs to come out before she can even think to use it.”

“Think she will call you?”

“I hope so. I’d love to do a custom bathroom in a house like that.”

“Then maybe she will contact you.”

“As long as she calls me after the snake problem is over.”
