“Oh, yeah, that’s not happening.” I quickly replied. Yeah, no. That so was not happening.

“Oh, come on, Charlotte. You can’t deny her the fun of dating.”

I turned to look at Judith, “I understand that most dating is rather innocent, but there are many predators out there, Judith. I should know. It was one of them that date raped me in college.” Her eyes went wide, “I was drugged at a party, woke up hours later in a strange motel room, naked and disoriented. Six weeks later, I learned that I was pregnant. I didn’t even remember the face of the guy I’d been with.”

“Did you report it?”

“No, I was way too embarrassed to report it. Besides, how could I report it when I didn’t even know what happened. I called a friend to come to get me and showered the minute I got home. I felt like crap for two days after, and the worst part about it was not really knowing who I was with, or what happened. I ended up dropping out of college and moving back home because the anxiety of it all was too much.”

“Did you tell your parents?”

“It was just my mom, but no, I never told anyone, not even my friends at school. When I found out I was pregnant, I told my mom it was from a guy I saw in college that wasn’t interested in being a father. She tried to push me to file for child support, but I refused to pursue it. After a while, she dropped it, and then she passed away.” I paused, “You’re the first person I have ever told about that.”

Why had I told her? Maybe because coming so close to losing Marisol had made me think of where she had come from. Yes, the situation was horrible, and my daughter was a product of a horrible crime, but she was the best thing to ever happen to me. Over time I had come to accept what had happened to me, even being slightly grateful that it had occurred in the first place. If it hadn’t, I’d be alone in life right now.
