“What kept you?” Bruce asked as he flipped the burgers on the grill.

“Car accident, four juveniles came in. Nothing life-threatening, just a lot of little things to be checked.”

“Ah, glad to hear that. When you didn’t show up, I was afraid I’d get a call. I know the hospital is short-staffed in surgery this week.”

“Yeah, a couple broken bones, and lots of bruises, but otherwise they will all live to terrorize their parents a little longer.”

We laughed, and I turned to look at the table again. My gaze going straight to Charlotte. Her gaze was on me, but she was staring at my chest. Maybe having a wet shirt was a good thing, I thought aimlessly. “I’m going to go say hello,” I told Bruce as I made my way to the table.

Charlotte lifted her gaze to mine as she pulled her bottom lip slightly under her teeth. Her cheeks started to color as she realized she’d been caught staring and the heightened color only made her more beautiful. “Hi, Charlotte.”

“Hi, Doctor Young. It’s nice to see you again.”

“Call me Wes, I’m not your daughter’s doctor anymore.”

“Hallelujah,” Jersey said as she passed by and slapped me on the shoulder with a wink.

“Wes,” Charlotte said softly as if she were testing it out on the tip of her tongue, and damn if I didn’t like the sound coming from her lips.

“How is Marisol doing? She looks like she is doing well.”

Jersey sat down beside me, “Stop playing doctor, Wes. You’re off the clock.”

Charlotte laughed, “Are doctors ever off the clock?”

Jersey winced, “Yeah, I guess you are right, but Wes just got here, he needs to get out of doctor mode, and just be a man.”

I laughed slightly, “Man mode, huh? What exactly is that?”

“You have to belch loudly and scarf your food,” Michelle said from the other side of the table, and her husband looked playfully offended.

“Hey,” Steve said to her. I’d met them at a previous picnic and knew he had a small general practice. “I resemble that.”

In fact, I knew the other two couples too and realized that Charlotte and I were the only single people here. Was that planned? I glanced at Jersey, and she winked.

Yeah, I was pretty sure this was planned, and as I turned toward Charlotte again and saw her watching me, I realized that I was totally down with the plan.
