Chapter Sixteen

Wesley

Ireally enjoyed showing Charlotte all the pictures in the living room and loved the little bit of time we spent in my bedroom. I was glad my mother had called us down when she did because if we had been left to our own much longer, I would have had her naked and under me. Knowing that she felt the same was, was blowing my mind and making it very hard to behave.

Over dinner, Charlotte laughed and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying herself. The tinkling laughter of Marisol warmed my heart in a way I could never have imagined. She was very proud of herself and made sure to tell everyone that they were eating pizza that she made. Tyler rolled his eyes, but Brad told him to cut it out.

After dinner, the kids went back out to the barn with my Pop and Brad, and my mother sat with Charlotte and me on the porch as the night critters began to come alive. I was full, not just my stomach, but in my heart, too.

My mom and Charlotte had hit it right off, as I knew they would. My parents were incredibly kind and friendly people, and I knew that no matter what they thought of someone on the first impression, they would accept them if one of us wished it.

Well, I didn’t just wish it, I was hellbent on achieving it. Marisol called out for her mom to come to see something, and Charlotte went to investigate.

“I like her, Wes.” She said when Charlotte was far enough away.

“I’m glad to hear that, Mom. I really like her, too.”

“I can tell.” She said with a knowing smile. “She seems to feel the same about you, and her daughter is a joy.”

“She is.”

She studied me for a moment, and I felt the turn in the conversation. The parental concern was about to come out, and I began to laugh. “Is a lecture coming about how she’s been through a lot, and I need to make sure that I’m thinking straight?”

She chuckled, “Yes. You know me well, but you also know that I want what is best for you, Wesley.”

“I do know that, Mom. From the first moment I met her, and she knocked me on my ass, I’ve been constantly knocked over and over again. That’s not a bad thing.” I smiled at her, “I mean, at first, it was a little painful, but I quickly realized that there was more there between us.”

“I think it is safe to assume that you didn’t know about her kidnapping?”

“No, I didn’t. When we pulled down the driveway, she didn’t know where she was, and she had a flashback.”

“Ah, is that why you two were standing in the middle of the driveway?”

I chuckled, “Yeah, I figured you had seen that.”

“I was wondering if it was because you had brought her home to meet us. I’m not sure most women would appreciate a family dinner on their first date.”

“Charlotte is not like most women, Mom.”

“No, she’s not, Wesley.” She pursed her lips for a moment, “What about her daughter? Where is her father?”

“I don’t know. Charlotte once told me he was out of the picture, but nothing else.”

“You might want to ask about that.” She hiked a brow, “make sure that he’s really not in the picture. I would hate for you to fall in love with that little girl, and then her father comes back into the picture and wants her. What if Charlotte is still in love with the man?”

I found myself frowning. I hadn’t even thought about that. “Yeah, I guess I do need to ask Charlotte about him.”

“I think that would wise, Wesley. You have good instincts, but even the best of us can be fooled when our heart is wanting something.”

“Yeah, I know.” I did appreciate my mother’s insight, and she was right. I really hadn’t put much thought into her biological father. I was going to have to speak to Charlotte about that and find out the story.

“I hope it works out for you. I can tell how much you care about them.”

“I do.”

“Doctor Young!” Marisol’s little voice yelled from the barn, “Come look at this!”

“You think maybe she might call you something other than Doctor Young anytime soon?”
