As Gideon and I hit the corner, the crowd behind us began to disperse, and I found a labyrinth of hallways and doors before me.

“This is our main floor, where most of the activity is.There are two more floors where people live, and then the floor above us is where business happens.”

“Business? What kind of business are you talking about?”

“The kind where we get our lives back and don’t have to fight to find things or hide in the shadows waiting for someone to stake us.”

“Do you have a plan?”

He grinned at me.“You’re going to help us with one.”

I laughed.“You sure are expecting a lot from me.How do you know I will even stay here?I don’t know these people, and I sure as hell don’t owe them anything.”

He turned, his steel-gray eyes observing me as his voice lowered.“You don’t?Don’t you think you owe them something after your sister left them all to die?I know she had her reasons, and I try to keep an open mind, but it’s hard some days, Angelina.Especially when we have lost so many of our breed.”

I lifted my chin.“I have no control over what my sister does.”

He cocked his head.“Why are you not with her?”

“I chose to leave.I didn’t want to hide there like a prisoner.”Mind you, I didn’t bother to tell him that I would have been a prisoner there.

“After seeing all that you have these last few months, do you wish you had stayed?”

I yanked my gaze from him, scanning the hallway and the people coming and going. The answer to that question was a difficult one, and I wasn’t sure.On the one hand, I was glad I was out here bearing witness to the death and torment of our people. On the other, I sure as hell wished that I had a nice cozy bed, a warm shower, and someone—and by someone, I meant Hugh—to screw regularly.

I sighed.“I don’t know, Gideon.I honestly don’t.”
