Chapter Twenty-One

Kristin

The decision to let Hugh leave was a difficult one for two reasons. One, I wasn’t one hundred percent sure that Zander’s blood was enough for my daughter, and two, I had no idea what would happen to Hugh once he left us.His safety would be in his own hands, and I was torn over the thought that he wouldn’t be able to handle that.I had to hope that his law enforcement training would keep him safe.

Isaac had assured me that the baby was thriving, and I had to rely on him. There were times that I worried about what he said. Was he being completely honest with me?Or was he out to harm my child?

I know that Hugh had thought that the minute he was gone, I would mate with Zander, but I refused to do that until my child was born.Once she was, I would consider the matter again.

Only Isaac, Zander, Clayton, Garrett, and Rane knew that Hugh was gone.We had stationed guards outside a suite, and they were compelled to believe that Hugh was inside. We made a show of bringing food into the room and then leaving with it empty. We even brought in women who were also compelled to act as if they were with him and had fed him.

I wasn’t sure how long we could keep it up, but I hoped until the baby was born.Once she was, I would decide what to do then.

Like I had told Hugh, I went to the balcony and waited for something from him.I knew he was alive, and I could feel him moving about. It wasn’t until the third night that he finally reached out to me.

“Kris, you there?”

“I am.How are you?Have you located her?”

“I think I have.I am meeting with someone soon who will take me to where I believe she is.”

“That is good.”

“I gotta tell you. It’s not as bad out here as the news leads us to believe.”

“It’s not?”

“Not really, at least not around here.I have seen several of our kind, and they shared stories of the horrors when it all started, but things have calmed.”

“Don’t be fooled. It is the calm before the storm.”

He chuckled.“And let me guess, you are the storm.”

I smiled to myself.“Yeah, something like that.”

“I have to go, but I will be in touch once I find her.Hopefully, by tomorrow night, I can have more to report.”

“Stay safe, Hugh.”

“I will.Speaking of safe, how are you feeling?”

“We are well.”

“Good.Bye, Kristin.”

“Goodbye, Hugh.”

I looked up at the sky and said a rare prayer.“Watch out for him.”

Back inside, I went to my office and worked for about two hours before Clayton and Zander joined me.“Anything from him?”Clayton asked as he took a seat.

“He thinks he found her and will hopefully make contact with her tonight.”

“Good.”Clayton nodded.“Have you given any more thought as to how soon after the child is born that we will open the doors?”

I shook my head.“No.I want to hear more of what Hugh finds, and hopefully, the people that he is with will be willing to work with us to fight back for our position in society.”

“They would be stupid not to,” Zander commented.
