I laughed.“Because you never do anything without his command.You can’t fucking think for yourself.”
His features hardened, and I thought he would strike out at me, but he didn’t.Instead, he laughed.
“Yeah, well, at least I’m on the right side.You screwed yourself when you sided with that bitch.”
Anger burned deep inside of me, but I didn’t want him to know that he had hit a nerve.Kristin and I weren’t a great couple, but that didn’t mean I didn’t care for her or need to protect her.“You’re talking about my mate, so I suggest you watch it.”
He laughed again.“If she’s your mate, why are you out here?What did she do, kick you out?”
“Hardly,” I replied.“Where is Joe?I want to talk to him.”
What I wanted to know was where Angelina was.Now that I was inside the building, I could feel her.I wasn’t too happy about what I was feeling, though.Her desires were strong in the air, and I knew she was having sex with someone.Her mate?Was she doing it because she loved him or because she was in the mood?
“He should be here to visit with you any moment.”As if on cue, I heard a metal door scrape open and footsteps cross the cement floor.
“Well, well, well.Look what the cat dragged in.Hugh, so nice of you to revisit me.”
“Why am I trussed up like a fucking turkey?I’m not here to cause problems.”
“Why are you here?”
“I’m looking for someone.”
He grinned.“Ah, let me guess.The mistress is worried about her sister, is she?Well, that is very strange that your mate would send you to find her sister.Isn’t the mistress still with child?Wouldn’t you need to remain at her side until the child is born?I do wonder what a reborn child will be like.You must be excited to find out.”
“Where is Angelina?”
“She’s fine.She’s safe and rather happy at the moment.Can you feel her?I can.She’s strong that one, and now that she’s mated to another reborn, she is even more incredible than she used to be.”
“Why is she here?Did you kidnap her too?”
“Not at all.Angelina and her mate arrived a couple of weeks ago on their own.They are here enjoying my hospitality.”
“Then why am I the lucky one chained to a table?”
He eyed me carefully.“Because you have information that I want and because I know that the mistress would probably do anything to protect her mate.”
“You expect her to rescue me?Is that what you think she will do?”I laughed.“You have no clue what Kristin will do, but I’m pretty sure she won’t be coming to get me.Not anytime soon.”
He cocked his head.“Did something happen to your child?”
“My child is fine.”
“Did she give birth already?Perhaps she has been pregnant longer than we believed.If that’s the case, the child could not be yours.”
“Kristin and the baby are none of your concern.Now let me out of here so I can see Angelina.If she is here on her own accord, then I will leave.”
He chuckled.“You know that’s not going to happen, Hugh.I’ll let you see her in time, but I can feel that you are still mated to the mistress, so let’s send her a message, shall we?”
“How the hell do you expect to send her a message?You think I am going to give you a phone number to call?”
“Oh, no.I’m going to rely on that bond that you two share.”
He held his hand out to Adam, and I saw him put a blade into his hand.“Now, where shall we start?”
I arched as far away from him as I could as he lifted the blade toward my head.“Don’t do it, Portage.”
“Are you going to stop me?”He laughed and grabbed my chin, pulling it toward him with a vise-like grip.“You have such a handsome face, Hugh.Why don’t we start there?Kristin is a beautiful woman.I’m sure she wouldn’t want to look upon a man who wasn’t an equal match.”
