He pulled his cellphone out of his pocket. “What’s your phone number?”

I stared at him. “Um, I said I would call you.”

He snickered. “And you would need my number to do that. I was going to text you from it.”

“Duh! God, I must be more tired than I thought.” I gave him my number and heard my phone beep a moment later.

While we ate, I told him what I’d found and how it was even worse than I had initially thought because the caving wall was bowed more than in just one section. There was a total of twenty-eight feet that would need to be braced. Carbon fibered straps would have to be attached to the footers of the wall and go the height of the wall to force it back into place and hold it there. Each strap needed to be placed between four to six feet from the other one, so that was a lot of straps and a good chunk of money. That didn’t include the piers needed to restore the balance of the structure. Or the water drainage system to keep the moisture out of there.

Plus, I didn’t tell Bollard this, but there was mold in the basement that would need remediation. It wasn’t horrible, but it would only worsen if not remediated soon.

After we finished eating, I yawned.

“What time does your day start tomorrow?”

“Six,” I replied.

“Well, we better get you out of here. You okay to drive home?”

“Yeah, I’ll be fine. I’m only ten minutes from here.”

“Alright.” Without another word, he collected my two bags of stuff and waited for me to proceed him out the door.

When we got to my SUV, I unlocked the doors and popped the back hatch.

“Do both of these go in here?”

“No, just the heavy one.”

He set it in the back and then closed the hatch.

“Thanks for the food. It was much better than a protein bar,” I told him as I stepped toward the driver’s door.

He smiled and shifted around me to open the door. Instead of moving out of the way, he leaned in, set my other bag in the passenger seat, then backed out and turned to me.

“Glad I could help.”

We stared at one another for a few seconds, and then I yawned again.

Michael chuckled and stepped forward, taking my face in his hands and tilting his head further to the side as he sealed his lips over mine. The kiss was much more intense than it had been this morning, and I clung to his biceps as my body came alive. All too soon, he slowly pulled back.

“That should keep you awake. Drive safe, Candy.”

I giggled. “I think there is no way I could fall asleep anytime soon after that kiss.”

He smirked. “Glad to know I’m not the only one affected.”

“Nope.”

He brushed his lips quickly over mine, and I wanted to capture them for another passionate kiss, but he stepped back. “Night, Candy.”

To be honest, I was glad that he did. For a moment, I had been contemplating whether to pull him into the back seat for a good ole make-out session or drag him up the steps to his room.

I started my engine and waved as I drove away, then I spoke softly to myself. “Oh, Candy, you are in hot water, girl.”
