I barked out a laugh. “You look far from shitty, sweetheart.”

She gave me a lopsided grin and shoved a fry into her mouth. “You are right. I could use extra sleep, but it’s too bad that my mind starts going a million miles an hour as soon as I lie down.”

“Yeah, I have my share of those nights.” Like last night, I wanted to add. Had she thought of me after she left here? How often did she think of me today? I knew she had since she reached out about the estimate.

“How do you finally get to sleep?” she asked as she wrapped her hands around her burger and took a bite much bigger than I had anticipated.

I glanced around to make sure no one was listening. “I don’t think you want me to answer that.”

She frowned and wiped her mouth, then spoke with her mouth full. “Why not?”

I snickered. “That is not very ladylike.”

One of the waitresses stopped at the sidebar and gave me an order. I leaned forward and lowered my voice as I answered Candy’s question. “I think about someone I enjoy having sex with or someone I want to have sex with, and I get myself off. That usually helps me sleep.”

“Yeah, I have done that too,” she said before taking another bite. Well, I hadn’t expected that admission. I filled the server’s order, then paused in front of Candy. She wiped her mouth and swallowed. “When was the last time you did that?”

I shook my head as I laughed. I couldn’t believe we were talking about this. “You want to know that?”

“I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t want to know.”

“Last night,” I replied and stepped away as a man approached the bar and asked for another beer.

When I returned, she opened her mouth to speak, but I held my hand up. “You didn’t answer that question yourself. When was your last time?”

She grinned. “Last night.”

Oh, now this was interesting. I watched Candy shove two more fries into her mouth, leaning over her plate slightly. “Who did you think about?”

“Yeah, I’m not going to answer that one.”

“Why not?”

I smirked and let my gaze scan the bar, looking for anyone who needed a drink. Things were about to get real, and I wasn’t sure that was good for her. “Because I don’t want to incriminate myself.”

“Oh, what a crock of shit!” she said with a bubble of laughter. “If you tell me, I’ll tell you who I was thinking about.”

“I have gone first with all your other questions. You go first this time.”

She started to open her mouth, but her cellphone began to ring. She held up a finger and answered, “What’s up, Dad?”

She listened for a second, and I saw her features change to concern. “I’m at the tavern. I’ll be right over.”

She hung up and shoved another bite of her burger into her mouth as she got off her stool. “I gotta go.” She began to dig through her purse and pulled out a twenty, tossing it onto the bar. “Keep the change.”

“Everything alright?”

“Yeah, it will be fine—minor crisis at my father’s. I’ll talk to you later. Thanks for the burger.” She stuffed about six fries in her mouth and then dashed out of the bar.

I moved her plate to the dirty bin and frowned as I pulled my phone out of my back pocket and texted her.You forgot to give me the estimate.

A moment later, my phone began to ring, and I answered it with a smile. “You miss me already?”

“Funny. I saw your message as I started my car. I did forget to give it to you, but it needs more than a five-minute explanation. Do you think I could stop by later?”

“I thought you wanted to go home and get some sleep?”

“Yeah, I’m not sure that will happen after our earlier conversation.”
