“Okay, so I have some juicy news. Dad is dating!”

“What?”

“Dad called me in a tizzy, needing my help. When I got to the house, he struggled to use the hand mixer to make mashed potatoes, and there were two plates on the table. He admitted that he was having dinner with a friend.”

“Who is the friend?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t want to push too much. He was being a little defensive, but I told him I was glad he was dating and that all of us would be happy. He was surprised to hear that. He thought we’d be upset he was seeing someone so soon after Mom’s death.”

“It’s been long enough,” Cara said. “He has every right to be happy and find someone to spend his time with.”

“That’s what I told him.”

“Well…” She paused. “I’m glad to hear that. I’ll call Dad tomorrow and ask how his date was.”

“No, don’t do that. Then he will know I told you.”

Cara scoffed. “Oh, come on, Candy. Daddy probably thinks you have posted it on social media already. He knows better than to tell you a secret he doesn’t want to share. If he wanted that, he would have called Evan.”

“Well, that is true.”

“And you know it. You can’t keep a secret to save your life.”

“Um, speaking of secrets, how much do you know about Michael Bollard?”

“Bollard?” Her voice immediately became suspicious. “Why are you asking about him?”

“No reason, really. I was just wondering. I’ve been talking to him recently because Howard is looking to sell the tavern, and Michael said he wanted to buy it.”

“Why would he want to buy it? Oh shit, does he want to turn it into a biker bar? That would ruin the tavern.”

“No, Cara, he’s out of the motorcycle club.”

“What are you talking about, Candy? You can’t get out of the club unless you are dead.” I heard Bryan in the background ask her what she was talking about, and she replied to him, “Candy is saying something about Bollard being out of the club and buying the tavern, which makes no sense.”

A second later, Bryan was on the phone. “Did he tell you he was out of the club?”

“Um, yes. After the big bust, the guys had the option to get out. He decided to. Howard is selling the tavern, and Michael is interested in buying it, but it needs a lot of work, so I don’t know what will happen.”

“How do you know all of this?” he asked suspiciously.

“Um, because I was talking to him. I inspected the property and found issues. Michael and I have been talking. He’s nicer than I thought he was.”

“Will you have reason to talk to him again?”

“Um, probably,” I replied. There was no way I would tell Bryan I planned to have sex with the guy in a few days.

“If you have the opportunity to ask, find out more about him getting out of the club. That could be useful information, but don’t make it suspicious.”

“Bryan, can I ask you a question?”

“Sure.”

“Did you like him? I mean as a friend. Was he a good guy? Did he have your back?”

Bryan was quiet for a moment. “Yeah, Bollard had my back and tried to keep his nose clean. While running with them, he did me a few solids, so I kept his name out of the circus roundup. I remember him one time telling me he wanted out of the club and wished he had never gone in.”

“He sounds like a good guy who got caught up in the wrong thing.”
