My phone beeped, and I pulled it out of my pocket and unlocked it. I had a text from Candy. I opened it and rocked back on my heels until I leaned against the back bar where the bottles were lined. Candy sent me a picture of her fucking naked legs from just below her sexy spot to her cute little toes.

The note below it read:So you don’t forget what you will have wrapped around you on Sunday.

I had an instant hard-on and wanted to spin around and run for the door to return to her house. Except as I lifted my eyes from the screen, Ethan stood before me.

“Bollard,” he said in his no-nonsense cop voice.

“Winston,” I replied. “You need another round?”

“No, I wanted to ask you a question.”

Well, fuck! Did someone tell him that I was talking to his sister? Did he drive by her house and see my truck in her driveway? I shoved my phone into my pocket and grabbed a rag to keep my hands busy so that I didn’t do something stupid, like threaten the guy—or worse, beg him.

“What?”

He glanced around and leaned closer. “I heard a rumor that Howard was selling the place. Is that true?”

As relief rushed down my spine, I scoffed, “Yeah, he is looking into it.”

“Does he have a buyer for it yet?”

“Um, he does, but there could be a problem.”

“What’s that?”

Why the hell was he interested? Did he know his sister had been here? Was he fishing for something? If he knew something, I better be as honest as I could.

“Your sister did the building inspection and found some problems.” I paused. “I, uh, just picked up the repair estimate from her.”

He blinked. “Candy?”

“Yeah.” I cleared my throat and pointed at the envelope. “I’m not sure his buyer will want to sink that amount of money into this place.”

“Ah, okay. My father mentioned something about the tavern being for sale.”

“You know someone interested?” I asked him as I wiped a glass dry.

He shrugged. “No, I was being nosy. I hope whoever buys it keeps it as it is.”

“Yeah, I was thinking about doing it myself, but the price is too steep for me.” I have no clue why I decided to share that little tidbit with him.

He frowned sternly at me. “We don’t need this place turned into a bikers’ slum.”

I glared at him. “That was not the plan, Winston. Besides, I’m out of the club. Maybe you need to update your file on me. It was made official two months ago.”

He stared at me as if trying to tell if I was lying. “I thought you could only get out if you were dead.”

“Nope, after everyone got arrested, a few of us decided to walk. I never was one for the guns and violence.”

He snorted a laugh. “Yeah, right. Why else would you join an outlaw gang?”

I shrugged. “Would you believe me if I told you I was young and stupid? I was looking for a family. They supplied what I needed.”

“Stupid is right,” he muttered. “Well, I hope you are out and keep your nose clean.”

He turned and walked away, and I frowned at his back. That comment threw me off. Why would he even care? His opinion meant nothing to me, but then I remembered the picture that Candy had just sent me, and I pulled it back out. Maybe being on his good side was a better idea.
