That seemed to calm him down, and he pulled me to him and hugged me tightly. “I understand the business side, but I don’t want to see you get heartbroken.”

“I won’t,” I replied. “My heart is not invested. My body might be, but my heart is safe.”

“Good.” He kissed my brow. “Now I need to go see how bad the chicken is burning.”

“Can you please be nice?” I said as we headed back outside.

Evan sighed wearily. “Yes, I can.”

“Thank you,” I told him before cutting off and heading back to the seating area, where Laney and Mike looked very serious.

Just as I reached them, Laney stuck her hand out to him. “So, it’s a deal?”

He nodded and put his hand into hers. “Yeah, it’s a deal, Laney.”

“Wait! Did I miss the whole negotiation?”

Laney snickered as Mike turned with a huge smile and said, “Yeah, sorry. She drives a hard bargain, but I couldn’t resist.”

“So, we are going to do this?” I asked excitedly as Evan joined us.

Mike looked at him cautiously, and Evan stuck his hand out to Mike. “Bollard, thanks for rescuing the chicken.”

Mike stood and looked him in the eye before taking his hand and pumping it twice. “Couldn’t let good food go to waste.”

Evan chuckled and went to sit beside Laney. I sank beside Mike but kept a respectable distance between us.

“To answer your question,” Laney supplied, “we will do this. You and I will both put in one hundred thousand, and Michael will make the purchase. The liquor license will have to be transferred to us, but once we take care of a few things, we will have Mike added to it.”

I nodded, excited that this was going to happen. Not sure what to even say.

Evan spoke. “I guess it is pretty cool that we will own a small piece of the tavern. I have a lot of memories of the place.”

“Yeah, me too,” Mike echoed the sentiment.

Shortly after that, Laney and Evan excused themselves to get dinner on the table, and I shifted closer to Mike. “Sorry about my brother earlier.”

“I should be the one apologizing.”

“No, don’t worry about it. He was just being protective. He’s fine now.”

“You know if he has a problem with us sleeping together, maybe we should stop.”

I stared at him for a few seconds. Did he not want to continue? I know I did. Maybe he didn’t feel what I did. “Do you want to stop?”

He glanced over his shoulder, curled his hand around my neck, and pulled me forward. “Fuck no!”

Our lips met in a deep, hungry kiss that promised more later. “Then we aren’t stopping. Evan will be fine. I promise.”

“What about Ethan?”

I winced. “Now, that might be another story.” I held his hand and squeezed. “Maybe I should apologize now.”

Mike snorted a laugh. “I’m not afraid of your brother.”

“You should be. The guy scares the hell out of me sometimes.” I was joking. Yes, Ethan was a cop, and he could be scary. I also knew that he would flip out even more than Evan had when he found out, but both needed to trust me. I could keep this a secret.

Over dinner, we discussed a few more aspects of the business, and Laney said she’d love to have an architect come by and start drawing up plans for the remodel.
