Candy chuckled. “Yeah, I think that might be okay.”

Harley looked thrilled, and Bryan stood up and put his arm around Cara.

“I thought he was going to punch you,” Cara said.

Bryan barked out a laugh. “I thought he was too, but I’m glad he didn’t.”

“Trust me. The thought was there. I didn’t know I wasn’t going to punch you until I didn’t.”

Cara glared at me. “Bryan, you need to know that he kidnapped my sister and made her bring him out here. He took her phoneandher computer so she couldn’t warn us.”

Bryan eyed me carefully. “You do that?”

“Yeah, I did.”

He shifted toward Candy. “You want to press charges? Because if you do, I’ll arrest him right now.”

She stared at me. “I don’t know. Let me think about it.”

“Arrest him?” Harley asked, suddenly looking scared. “What did he do?”

Candy bent down. “Nothing you need to worry about, Harley. The adults are just joking.”

“Oh,” he said as she took his hand and led him toward the house.

I watched Candy, and I wasn’t sure if she was joking or not. If Bryan was an FBI agent, he could have me arrested, and everything I had been working toward would be gone in a flash.

We sat on the back porch, and I told Bryan what had happened after he died, and he told me his purpose for being undercover. We were on our third beer when I turned to him. “Why wasn’t I arrested? I know you had enough to put me away for years too.”

He stared at me and then shrugged. “I don’t know, man. I guess something in me saw the good in you. Maybe I knew one day you’d find a way out and do something good with your life.” He paused. “I never thought that good thing would be Cara’s sister, though. Do Evan and Ethan know?”

“Oh, yeah, they know, and trust me, they weren’t too happy about it.”

He laughed, and then we watched the women standing near the horses with the kids. Neither of us said anything for a long time, but then he turned to me.

“How serious is it?” he asked. I could pretend that I didn’t know what he meant, but I didn’t.

“Before this shit went down, I asked her to marry me.”

“No shit?”

“Yeah, I did, but she turned me down. Said that I didn’t fit into part of her life. I have concluded that this was the part she meant.”

“And now you know.”

“Yep, now I know.”

“What are you going to do about it?”

I barked out a laugh. “Wait for her to tell me what she wants, I guess.”

He laughed heartily. “I seemed to recall a time that you all thought I was pussy-whipped. It sounds like you found that whip yourself.”

I grinned. “Yeah, I just might have.”

Bryan stared at me, his eyes serious. “Candy is an incredible woman. Smart as hell. I don’t know what the hell she might see in you, but if she decides that she wants in with you, you better fucking treat her like gold. Cara will probably make me hunt your ass down if you don't.”

The two of us chuckled. “I hear you.” I stared at Candy as she bent over to speak with Harley. “I’m pretty sure I’d be easy to find.”
