By the time Gus has the car loaded, my cock is back to normal, so I turn and head back to the truck. “We’re all set. He’s going to tow it to Declan’s shop, and they’ll let us know what’s going on. I didn’t have your number, so I told them to just call me.” I hand her my phone. “Add yourself in there, and I’ll text it to Dec, so he has it.”

She takes my phone and tries to open it. “Uh, I need a passcode,” she says, trying to hand it back.

“123456.”

“Brooks! That’s like the easiest code ever.”

“I know, but I hate the damn thing. The only reason I have a code on it at all is because when I’m at work, it’s in my scrub pockets, and I end up calling random people when it’s not locked.”

“I guess that makes sense. But still, you need to make it a little harder. What if someone found your phone?”

I shrug. “I’ve had a phone for years now and never lost one. Although, I guess there is a first time for everything. Go in and change it for me.”

“What? No. You should do that. You don’t want me to have your code.”

“Why not? Are you going to steal my phone?”

“No.”

“Then make me a new code and tell me what it is.”

“When’s your birthday?”

“August ninth.”

“0809,” she mumbles as her fingers fly across the screen. “There. Done.” She places my phone back into the cupholder.

“Thank you. Now, we’ve got some groceries to buy.” Checking my mirrors, I pull out onto the road and head to my original destination. I wasn’t expecting her today, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t happy with how the day turned out.

CHAPTERFOUR

Palmer

Brooks pulls into the driveway of his house and puts his truck in Park. “I hate that I’m taking your wheels,” I tell him. We spent over an hour in the grocery store. He followed me around the store like a lost puppy, and since I didn’t know what he needed, I made sure to stroll up and down every aisle. It was surreal, and much to my surprise, enjoyable. I had a good time grocery shopping with the hottie, but I’ll take that with me to the grave.

“Palmer, it’s fine. Trust me on this. I’m going to pack in these groceries, do some meal prep, and I’ll sleep in tomorrow, which basically means sleeping until like seven because my body is used to getting up early for work. Besides, I want to mow the lawn before the hot June sun is high in the sky, and just chill. It is my day off, after all.”

“I know, but it sucks to not have your vehicle.”

“I’ll be fine.” He’s quick to reassure me.

“Well, let me help you carry everything inside.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I do.” I climb out of the truck and open the back door to start grabbing his groceries.

“You think you’re going to be all right driving this thing?” he asks, taking the majority of the bags and shutting the door with his hip.

“Yeah, I’ll be fine. I’ve driven my dad’s and Deacon’s several times.” I follow him into the house and place the bags on the counter as my phone rings. Digging it out of my back pocket, I answer, “This is Palmer.” I listen to the caller, my client, for this evening. “Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. Sure, just call me when you’re ready to reschedule.” We say our goodbyes, and I end the call.

“Everything okay?” Brooks asks.

“Yes. That was my client for this evening. They had to cancel. She’s sick. Bronchitis.”

“Bummer,” he replies.

“Well, I guess I don’t need your truck now.”
