“It was fun and so good, but I ate way too much.” I place my hand over my too-full belly.

“It was fun.” He glances over with a smile on his handsome face, and I have to work extra hard to breathe normally.

The sun is starting to set, and I realize the majority of my day was spent with him. “I took up most of your day.”

“Nah, I got everything done that was on my list. And had great company while doing it.”

Does he not realize that when he says things like that, it makes my heart flutter in my chest? It almost feels like a bird is caged inside, trying to take flight.

“You can just take me home,” I tell him. “I can call you when Declan calls me or call Ramsey. She can take me.”

“Do you want to go home?” he asks.

Damn it. “No.”

“Good. Besides, we have some meal prepping to do.”

“You still want to do that?”

“Yeah, I mean if I don’t do it now, I have to do it tomorrow since I work again on Friday. I told you I’d show you.”

“That was before you took me to Harris for the food trucks.”

“You got plans tonight, Palmer?”

I want to lie. Not because I don’t want to spend time with him, but because I crave time with him, and I know this can only end one way for me. “No.”

“Then we meal prep.” He says it so simply, as if spending more time with me isn’t a big deal. I guess to him, it’s not, but to me, it’s everything. So much so that my teenage heart that’s still buried down deep is starting to resurface. It’s risky, but no way am I saying no. I’ll take all the time he’s willing to give me.

“So, what are we making?” I ask him.

“Chicken, rice, black beans, and broccoli.”

“I’m feeling pretty guilty right now about all the junk I just ate with you listing off all of those healthy options.”

A deep throaty laugh reaches my ears. “It’s fine to indulge, Palmer.”

I’d like to indulge in you.“Two words, Kincaid. Funnel cake.”

“You loved it.”

“Oh, I’m not debating that. I enjoyed the hell out of it.”

He turns onto his road, and my cell phone rings. Digging it out of my purse, I see Ramsey’s smiling face on my screen. “Sorry,” I tell him before swiping at the screen and placing the phone to my ear. “Hello.”

“You didn’t call me.”

“I said I would when I get home.”

“Where are you?”

“We just pulled into Brooks’s driveway.”

“The plot thickens,” she says.

“Stop it.” I chuckle.

“Tell me what’s going on? Where were you?”
