He looks down, fire dancing in those dark blue orbs. “I can’t wait to look up in those stands and see you wearing my number.”

I relax, my cheek returning to his chest. “The lady was happier than she’d ever been and excited to tell her family about the handsome prince she was seeing.”

“Nope. Nuh-uh. They’re way past seeing each other,” he states, interrupting me once again.

“Is this your story or mine?” I joke, hitching my leg up onto his.

“Your story is missing the facts, love.”

“Fine, the lady couldn’t wait to tell her family about the handsome prince she was in love with.”

“Better,” he croons, the deep, rich timbre of his voice like a caress down my spine, igniting my desire once more. He runs his fingers across my back, leaving a trail of fire in their wake.

“Anyway,” I start, wiggling just the slightest to help alleviate the sudden ache between my legs, before I pause. “I forgot what I was going to say.”

He chuckles, dropping his hand down below the blanket and gripping my ass. “Let’s see if I can help you remember.”

CHAPTER

NINETEEN

Brock

Monday night’s game was the best of my professional career. Hell, maybe the best game I’ve played my entire life. I don’t know if it was the fact that I fell asleep with Joey in my arms and woke up with her still there? Or maybe it was the fact that I finally made love to her? Maybe it’s because I’m in love with her? Then again, it could be that I knew my girl was in the stands cheering me on, wearing my jersey. It’s probably a huge combination of everything, but there is one thing in common with each scenario.

Joey.

She’s never far from my mind, which is why as I start dinner, even though it’s her night, I have a smile on my face. We actually got dismissed early today, and when we got home, she was still at her interview. I decided to start on dinner. Nothing fancy. Spaghetti and meatballs since Caleb and I always need the carbs. Sure, it’s our bye week since we played Monday, but we need fuel for practice too. I might be using it as an excuse to pig out on carbs, but whatever.

“Damn, that smells good,” Caleb says, entering the room.

“I think you’re just hungry,” I joke.

“I stand behind the smells good comment, but I’m also starving.” He slides onto a stool at the island.

“It’s almost ready. I’m going to wait until Joey gets here to put the garlic bread in the oven. It only takes a few minutes to heat up.” The words are barely out of my mouth when the front door opens, and footsteps carry down the hall.

“Hey,” Joey greets us.

“Hey.” I smile at her. Probably bigger than I should for just seeing my best friend’s little sister come home from an interview, but I can’t seem to stop it. She’s my everything, and it’s getting harder and harder not to show it. Besides, I haven’t laid eyes on her all damn day. Too long in my book.

Caleb furrows his brows at me but turns to his sister. “How did it go?”

“Good!” she says excitedly. “The manager who interviewed me was really nice, and we hit it off. I think I got it,” she says optimistically.

“That’s great, ba—badass,” I say, faking a cough like a fool. I almost slipped and called her baby. “We knew you would kill it.” I said we, hoping Caleb thinks my enthusiasm is just me being supportive.

“Congrats, Joey,” Caleb tells her, pulling her into a hug.

I ball my fists at my sides to keep from reaching for her. I want to hold her. I want to hug her close and congratulate her with a kiss on her sweet lips.

Just a few more days.

He releases her, and she steps around the island to stand next to me. Unable to resist, I give her a one-armed hug. “Congrats.” My voice is softer than it should be, but it’s too late now.

“Something smells good.” Joey smiles up at me.

I’d give anything to be able to kiss her. “Just spaghetti and meatballs. I need to pop this into the oven.” I grab the baking sheet that holds the garlic bread.
