A sleek, dark gray sedan pulled up in front of me, and the driver rolled down his window. “Did you request an Uber?”
His dark hair was slicked back off his face with soft bristles coating his jaw and upper lip. He offered me a smile that warmed me right through. He was handsome, and his suit did not look like he should be driving an Uber. He was better suited for the financial district or a political meeting. Except, his features were younger than most politicians, so maybe he would be an assistant.
“Miss?”
“Oh, yes. Sorry.” I scrambled to get around the car to the passenger side, preferring the front to the back, which always gave me car sickness. “I’m Eve,” I said as I slid in next to him, grabbing the seat belt and clicking it in.
“Eve.”
He purred my name, the rumble going right through me and coiling my stomach as I looked at him. The look on his face had changed, and I found myself biting my lip.What is that?
“I’m Luc.”
“It’s nice to meet you. Thanks for the lift.”
He flashed a grin as if to say it was his job and nodded at the radio. “Pick your poison.”
“Can we talk instead? I’ve been listening to shitty EDM all night. I’d much rather the conversation.” It was an effort to keep my words straight and not slur them like the drunkard I was. My eyes wanted to close, but I forced them open and focused on Luc, taking in everything about him. He was beautiful.
“I’d love that, Eve.”
He said my name in that way again, and the coil in my stomach tightened even more. Suddenly, the word dawned on me—lust.Oh.
He turned the radio off, jerking me out of my thoughts.
“Do you do anything other than drive drunks around at night?”
“I’m in the family business during the day.” He pulled away from the curb and began a slow crawl through the street while drunk college kids suddenly dodged into traffic as they carelessly crossed from one bar to the next.
“What’s that?”
He didn’t answer immediately as he signaled a turn, overtaking another cab sitting at the corner waiting for two drunk girls to climb out.
“A little bit of this, a little bit of that.”
“So why do you drive at night?” He glanced at me and smiled again, having the same—if not worse—effect on me.
“I like the people I get to meet. It’s fascinating.”
“Oh, I can imagine.” I laughed, leaning my head against the headrest, and my eyes closed. The dizziness abated somewhat, and the lull of the car was perfect as we slinked along.
“The night tends to bring out all kinds of characters.” He spoke, but I couldn’t bring myself to open my eyes, their weight too heavy as I gave in to the siren call of sleep. “You have to be careful, Eve. You never know what kind of dark, dangerous creatures you’ll meet—or get into the car with.”

She looked like Sleeping Beauty.Brown hair splayed out on the bed, full, soft pink lips gently opened while she breathed delicately. She was perfection, and the sight of her, honestly, had taken me off guard.
The plan was to seduce her, take her to her father, and threaten her to make him speak. But one glance, and I needed more than a pawn. I needed a queen.
How was I going to convince her to love her random Uber driver?
Grabbing the sheets, I pulled them over her and tucked her in, carefully ensuring no one could see anything that belonged to me. She was mine now. I walked to the desk where I’d left her purse, digging through it to find her phone. I quickly mirrored it before putting it back.
I didn’t want to leave her, but kidnapping wasn’t how I wanted to win her heart. No, I liked the challenge of getting to know her, infiltrating her life, and becoming the air she breathed until she needed nothing but me.
Opening the door slowly, I slipped into the hallway as voices echoed from the stairwell. I shifted into invisibility, stepping back against the wall as I waited for them to pass. A trio of boys came laughing and stumbling down the hall, talking about a pair of girls they’d met at the club.
“Duke, you still trying to get laid with Eve?” One jostled another who laughed.
