EVE

“Let me.”He held out his hand and helped me out of the booth. I couldn’t help the smile that crossed my face. It was such a small gesture, but all night long, it was like the Duke I was out with was different from the one who’d been distant and unforgiving in the last few weeks—ever since I told him I wasn’t ready to sleep with him.

The change hadn’t gone unnoticed. He was sweet and charming initially, and after I said no, he drew away and became cold. In fact, I’d been preparing to dump him on this date. But now? Now, I was confused. He was so different. I couldn’t put my finger on it.

“Can I ask you something?”

He held the door open for me to go through first, his gaze trailing hotly down my body, making me burn from head to toe. He nodded. “Anything you want, little dove.” He stepped out behind me, his presence looming as his chest hovered close to my back. So different from his earlier behavior.

“What changed?” I spun to face him, inhaling sharply as I found myself nearly nose-to-chest with him, forcing my neck back to look at him.

“Changed?”

I nodded, catching my bottom lip between my teeth and sucking on it for a moment. “I understood after our last date that you weren’t interested in anything serious if I wasn’t going to …put out, as you said. And now,” I tilted my head to the side, “well, you’ve changed.”

“Perhaps I’ve had a change of mind.” He smiled crookedly, and my stomach knotted with desire. Maybe I was wrong for wanting to hold out …No, waiting was the right choice until I was sure … unless I already was.

My head swam with confusion, and I forced it back onto our conversation. “Was there something I did or—I guess, I’m wondering where the change came from.”

His hand slid along my lower back as he guided me to his car, grabbing the door and helping me inside. As I reached for the belt, his hand stopped mine, and he leaned over me to click it.

His face turned slightly to me. “You don’t need to worry about anything anymore, little dove. I will take care of all your needs, forever.”

A shiver coursed through me when he pulled away and closed the door, walking around to his side and climbing in. He might’ve done up my belt, but he ignored his own as he started the car and pulled out of the spot.

“When I met you, I was under the impression you were a harlot. That’s what the others believed, and at first, I suppose, that’s what I wanted from you. But the more I’ve gotten to know of you, the more I realize you’re not like that at all—are you, Eve?”

“So, it was just about sex?” I glanced at him, frowning.

“Perhaps at first. But I’m a different man now. I want something different. Yes, eventually, I hope you’ll give yourself to me, but I can be patient. Waiting brings the sweetest reward—Eve.”

We fell into silence as I considered his words. I knew what he was speaking about.Harlot.The word sent a splash of shame through me. I wish I could remember what happened that night, I hoped it wasn’t the worst, but I didn’t know for sure. Did he?“I realized you’re not like that at all,”maybe he did know something.

“You’re talking about what the frat brothers say about me, aren’t you?” He glanced at me, but before he answered, I continued, “It’s not true. At least, I don’t think it is. I remember getting really drunk. I was in way over my head, but my mom was strict growing up, and it was my first time letting … loose. I ended up in someone’s bedroom, passing out, and when I woke, my clothes were gone. I thought maybe I’d been—” The words stuck in my throat, and I held in a choked sob before shaking my head. “I went to the doctor’s the next week for a physical, and everything was fine. I think maybe—”

“They took pictures,” he said tightly, his knuckles white in their grip on the steering wheel. “I’ve seen them.”

I exhaled, unsure why I felt relief at the modest invasion of privacy, but it was better than being … “So, then someone started the rumor that I slept with them, and, well, my reputation now speaks for itself. Some girls in my dorm don’t want to be associated with me, leaving only the scandalous girls to hang out with, and they’re always out partying—”

“You don’t have to explain yourself to me, little dove. I know the truth.” He looked over at me as he parked the car and leaned over, undoing my belt. “You’re as pure as your name suggests, because, like your namesake, you were tricked into a reputation of sin. I know.” He stroked my cheek tenderly, and another curl of desire found weight in my stomach.

“Yes,” I whispered, more at ease. I didn’t have to explain myself to him anymore. He knew.

“I’m sorry if I ever believed the lies and made you feel unworthy. You should be worshipped, and I will—worship you, that is—for eternity.” He climbed out of the car and walked to my side, holding my door open for me.

Taking my hand, he led me to the dormitory, opened the door, and walked inside. I found myself staring at Duke with new eyes. Maybe he was the one. He saw through the lies. Sure, it took him time, but could I blame him for that? The rumor mill had been working overtime at first. One voice in the din wouldn’t have been enough to convince him.

I leaned back against my door, not bothering to take out my keys. “So, when does this worshiping begin?”

He stepped closer, his hand sliding into my hair as he cupped my neck. “Now, if you’d like.” His voice was barely above a whisper.

He paused for only a second to ensure my consent before leaning in and capturing my lips in a deep kiss. It stunned me right to my very core as his fingers tightened their hold and his tongue slid along the seam, easing its way into my mouth. He licked gently, letting his taste linger in my mouth as he gathered mine in his.

Then, he stroked the roof of my mouth, sending a torrent of butterflies into a frenzy in my stomach. My body arched closer to his, seeking his heat and solidity as my hand gripped his waist and pulled him closer. His other hand snaked around my waist, closing the small space between us. The door magically popped open, and we fell through it onto the other side.

LUCIFER

This plan was working betterthan I could’ve imagined. She was so willing and yielding. She would give herself to “Duke” and never know she was turning her body over to Lucifer.
