Prologue: Skye

July

My body was alight with different emotions. I couldn’t believe that out of the hordes of girls outside their tour bus, Roman Knolls had pointed at Logan and me. Now, we were being ushered through the hotel to party with the band in their suite.

I glanced at my best friend, shooting her a smile riddled with excitement and nerves. She grabbed my hand and squeezed it tightly as I interlocked our fingers and held on for dear life.

“Is this happening?” I whispered to her.

She shrugged. “I don’t know, but I’m going with it.”

The security guard paused outside a door throbbing with bass. “Phones,” he said drolly, holding out his hand. “And I’m going to have to pat you down.”

Logan and I looked at each other before holding out our phones and watching the security guard pocket them. “If you need to use them, you can find me, or if you’re ready to leave, I’ll give them to you when you get outside. Got it?”

We nodded before he stepped forward, touching us gently as he patted us both down. I wasn’t entirely sure what he was checking for. A weapon? Another phone? Drugs? He seemed satisfied whatever he was searching for wasn’t on our bodies and pulled out a key card. The door swung open, and a cloud of smoke drifted through the doorway.

“Have fun,” he said, giving us a blatant look that told me he thought we were nothing more than groupies.

Honestly, sex hadn’t even crossed my mind. I mean, sure, it was a possibility now we were here, but it hadn’t been my goal.

I just wanted to meet the band.

As soon as the door closed, somebody appeared holding a tray of drinks. I couldn’t tell if they were hotel staff, roadies, groupies, or band members. The room was hazy and loud. The only lights were those of the city filtering through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows.

“Holy smokes,” Logan whispered, squeezing my hand tighter. “What have we gotten ourselves into?”

I shrugged. “I have no idea, but I need to find Roman. I want to get his autograph.”

I feverishly scanned the room for him. My heart nearly stopped when I found him sprawled out on the couch, beer bottle in hand and his other arm wrapped around what was definitely a groupie.

Taking a deep breath, I steeled myself, pushing away the nerves. Roman wouldn’t want a nervous, shy girl. He wanted someone confident, and I would give it to him.

“Hey,” I said in my sultriest voice, which was not that sultry, but I was trying. I sat on the side not occupied by the groupie, twisting my body toward Roman. “I’m Skye.” I grinned, pushing my hair behind my ear. I was playing it cool, but my insides were jumping around, trying to relieve themselves from my body.

I’m sitting next to Roman Knolls, attempting to half-ass flirt with him. Roman. Freaking. Knolls.

“Hey.” He grinned, pulling his arm away from the groupie, who let out a soft huff before rising from the couch and stumbled away. “Can I get you a drink?” His eyes slithered along my body appreciatively, and my stomach knotted as I realized sex might be more likely than not.

“I’d love that.” Truthfully, I was underage, but he didn’t need to know that. Roman lifted a hand and waved lazily at a server. As Roman was the band's frontman, he rushed over immediately.

“What can I get you, sir?”

He placed the beer bottle on the tray. “I’ll take an ounce. What do you want, sweetheart?” He put his hand on my thigh, sliding it slowly under the leather skirt I was wearing.

“Uh—a beer is fine,” I stuttered, unsure what I liked to drink. I mostly drank at elicit house parties where Logan mixed them into some fruity concoction so I couldn’t taste the alcohol. That was exactly the kind of drink I liked but I wasn’t going to say that in front of Roman Knolls.

The server nodded and walked off while I wondered what an ounce was and if I should’ve ordered one of those instead.

“Hey.” Roman turned his attention toward me completely. “I haven’t seen you here before. Are you new?”

I nodded. “Yeah, my friend and I came to the concert tonight. You were amazing,” I gushed, grinning girlishly at him. So much for playing it cool, but honestly, Roman Knolls had been my childhood crush forever. And now, to be sitting next to him, able to tell him how much I adored him, I was overcome.

Roman, however, didn’t seem fazed as he grinned. “Yeah? Do you want to tell me more about how amazing I am?” His hand slid further up my thigh, and he lifted me with ease, planting me in his lap.

“Sure,” I said nervously as he leaned in, brushing his lips against my neck. My stomach knotted tightly, and I wasn’t sure if it was with nerves or arousal. “I’ve been obsessed with you forever. Your voice is like listening to the gods, and your face—”
