Page 19 of Changing Her Tune

God, I hoped she kept her legs crossed. I’d promise to be there. It would kill me if I broke any of my promises to her.

Jumping into the passenger seat, I glanced at Tank. “Cedars-Sinai now!”

He didn’t need more than that. He knew what was happening as the wheels squealed out of Television City’s parking lot, heading for the gates and onto the road.

I forgot about my seat belt, bracing myself on the dashboard. My fingers grew white with tension as Tank weaved effortlessly through traffic, my foot drumming a hole in the passenger floor.

It was only a few minutes, but it felt like an eternity before he finally pulled up in front of the emergency department. I ran like a madman through the sliding doors and rushed for the map. A glance told me everything I needed.

“Third floor. Third floor. Third floor.” I repeated to myself, aware if anyone got too close, they might be compelled to admit me for a psychiatric hold. I assaulted the up button while waiting for the elevator and stepped inside, equally attacking the third-floor button until the doors closed.

I wanted to pace as I waited, nervous energy buzzing through me. My fists clenched and released at my side until finally, the doors opened, and it took everything inside of me not to yank them open with hulk-like strength.

I rushed to the circular sage green desk, slamming into it with both hands and panting to catch my breath.

“Sk … Skye … Sav … Fowler …” I almost said, “Skye Savage,” and a possessive urge clenched my heart. Damn, that sounded good. I would brand her with my last name so she would always be mine.

Just not right now.

“I’ll show you.” The nurse rose from the desk, offering a friendly nod as she tilted her head and led the way. Not very quickly, though.

“Is she in labor?”

“Last we checked, yes.”

“Shouldn’t someone be with her?”

“That’s why you’re here, isn’t it?” Not what I meant, but my heart seized nonetheless. Yes. It was.

“Here she is.” She smiled and pushed the door open, revealing a gowned Skye pacing the floor of her birthing suite, one hand clutching her back and the other holding her belly. She paused in her step to look at me, and a scowl formed on her beautiful features.

“Get the fuck out! This is your fucking fault!”

TWELVE

SKYE

He stood there dumbstruck as another contraction hit, and I doubled over with a groan before pacing away from him. I didn’t have time to deal with him. I was about to have a baby.

Holy fuck.

I made my way over to the small couch under the window and gripped the arm as I closed my eyes and tried to breathe through the contraction. Waves of panic washed over me at the realization this was happening, and Logan was nowhere to be seen. Of course, she was busy with college, but when we talked about it, she said she’d be here. She would be my support person.

That was before Cash came into my life, and he became not just my support person but my other half. Until today. Glancing over my shoulder, I found he was still standing there, torn between following what I wanted or being the stubborn asshole I knew he would be.

“Don’t make me repeat myself, Cash,” I growled, my finger digging into the soft cotton arm.

“How did you know?” he asked.

“What do you mean ‘how did I know?’ They told me! That’s why I fell. I was trying to get to the Uber, and they swarmed me, demanding to know if it was true. Then, one turned to look at me and said whether I confirmed it didn’t matter. They already had a source close to the situation that said it was his.”

The tightening of my belly released, and I straightened again, taking the moment of reprieve. I had maybe another two minutes, three at best before another contraction was going to hit, and the nurse promised she’d be back to check how far dilated I was. I didn’t want to be having this conversation, but this stubborn asshole wouldn’t leave unless I told him everything.

“A source?” he asked with a frown, looking even more confused. My head whipped toward him as I scowled.

“You. They said the source was you, Cash.”

He scrubbed a hand over his beard and then scratched the back of his head. “I’m so fucking confused. What are we talking about?”
