I needed to know more about what was happening. It disturbed me to no end that a man, who had amassed as much power as me, could be forced into something like this so easily and blindly.

I had to reach out to the council before she arrived. I needed more details. If I was going to go along with this, I wanted more information.

Slowly bringing the phone away from my ear, I set it back down on the corner of my desk and turned back to Reuben. “Where were we?”

Newfound anger bristled through me, and it had nothing to do with the slimeball slumped in front of me. Not that it mattered. He would bear the brunt of my ire since he was conveniently in place for it.

Walking over, with one swift kick, I blew his knee out of the socket and bent his leg the wrong way. A howl of pain reverberated around the room as Reuben threw his head back, his eyes wide open.

“Good. You are awake.” I didn’t stop the cruel smirk on my face as I enjoyed the look of pure terror in his eyes. “Listen, our time together is coming to a sudden and abrupt end. As much as I want to be able to enjoy this, it is not possible. I am expecting company, so I will make this quick. Surely, you understand rules are in place for a reason. Without rules, there is chaos, and with chaos comes the decimation of our numbers. So, the rules are in place to keep us safe. We abide by the rules, and those who do not suffer the consequences. These are the consequences.”

My hand snapped out, launching into his chest and breaking through the bone and muscle covering his heart. That was when the door to my office opened, startling the guards as they stumbled back, trying to catch the doors in their momentum.

In the threshold stood, presumably, my future wife. Her cold, dark eyes roved from my face, following the trail of my arm to where my hand was buried in another man. She lifted an eyebrow.

“Am I interrupting something?”

With another hard yank, I freed his heart from its cavity, holding the still beating organ in my fist as the pool of blood settled on the ground by my feet. She couldn’t be human because she wasn’t running and screaming. She almost looked amused.

Five seconds ago, I would’ve told you I wasn’t interested in a wife. But maybe with this one … I could make something work. My eyes roamed along her svelte frame, drinking in the curves carved down her silhouette. Long, dark hair hung around her shoulders, gently curling to frame her face. Dark eyelashes framed those big, dark eyes, and I pictured what they’d look like staring at me from her knees.

She was exquisite and tempting enough to make me consider thanking the council for such a gift. Whatever she was, though, she was dangerous. Even that thrilled me. And for the first time in my long, cold existence, I felt the stirrings of something. It exploded as my eyes lifted to meet the gaze of the man behind her.

Fuck, I hope he was part of the package too.

“Out, both of you, before I incinerate you.” Aida snapped her fingers at the two guards posted by the door. They hesitated, looking at me, and I nodded. The man behind her turned to close the doors, giving me a view of his tight ass. His heart was racing, but not out of fear. Something else.

I sniffed the air subtly before smirking. Arousal. Fascinating.

“Aida De Luca.” She approached and held out a slender hand. I stared at it for a moment and tested her, reaching out with my blood-soaked hand to grasp hers. Bringing it to my lips, I kissed the back.

“Magnus Vindex.” I held her hand and her gaze. “And you are?” My eyes flicked to the other man.

Aida replied quickly. “This is Talon, my Alpha hell-hound.”

“Hell-hound,” I said thoughtfully, still staring at him lustfully. How intriguing to see one in the flesh. What did his shifted form look like? It was probably as magnificent as the man himself.

My eyes turned back to the slight woman at his side. If he was a hell-hound, there was only one option for what she was. I stepped closer, cupping her face in my hand and enjoying how the blood smeared across her skin in contrast. She didn’t flinch.

As I brushed my thumb along her lips, she flicked her tongue against the pad, and it was like a lightning bolt to my cock. I could see it in my mind, taking her to bed and all the ways I’d sink my cock into her. I pictured the way she would writhe and moan as I lapped and worshipped her body with Talon by our side.

Yes. She would make a suitable wife for me.

But together, the three of us could be unstoppable.

TALON

I was tryingto still the rapidness in my heart. I didn’t want him to hear it and be able to read it for what it was—unbridled and sudden attraction.

But this was different, and in a way I never expected to feel again. Not the way I did with Aida. The word, so familiar to me when I was in her presence, sang louder now that they were both enclosed in a room with me.

Mate. Mate. Mate. Mate.

It pounded against my skull like it was trying to free itself. It wasn’t possible, not for a creature like me. We were duty-bound to Hell and nothing more. Although, if he was a vampire, he was a creature of Hell. The offspring of an ancient spell cast on a human to punish them for disobedience.

And he was old.

I could smell it in the air. Not in the way you’d expect of a geriatric home. No staleness or decay but like a fine wine left to age, a delicate bouquet that smelled as if it was made only for me. My eyes flipped to Aida, could she smell it too?
