Then recently, he released a song calledAbout to Fall, which had been remixed with a rapper and was the main song from the new Spiderman movie. He was huge now, and I was so proud of him. He was out on tour, playing venues that were at least twice the size of the ones he played before. He had been one of my best friends for a long time, and it was an honor to watch him grow and learn and make progress.

"That's cool," Micah said, talking about Jake being a musician. "I just didn't think you were into that kind of guy."

"Why would you think that?" I asked, looking at an entire shelf of pie pans.

"Because two out of three of your boyfriends have been doctors, and the third was a lawyer."

"So? That was just a coincidence," I said. "It doesn’t mean I have a certain type."

"Yes, you do. Those guys you date are always a certain type. They all wear khakis and use hair product."

"Don't act like you've never put product in your hair."

"I don't, other people do that stuff to me. And I'm just saying—doctors and lawyers are a certain type. There's a whole song about it. You're not into the guys who play guitars and drive trucks."

"What? What song are you talking about?"

"Waylon and Willie.Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys. Don't let 'em pick guitars and drive them old trucks, make 'em be doctors and lawyers and such."

He sang the song like he knew it well, and I laughed. "Did you make that up just now?" I asked.

"Claire, you've never heard that song?"

"No. It sounds like you just made it up to prove a point."

Micah laughed. I could hear him, and it made me smile.

"What?"

"I can't believe you don't know that song. It's a classic."

"I don't," I said. "I've never heard that in my life."

"Wow, I feel like I've dropped the ball as your friend, honestly. I mean, between me and your parents… surely Samuel and Big Jim listen to Willie."

"Willie who?" I asked.

"Nelson."

"Oh, yeah," I said, knowing that name. "Is he who sings that song?"

"Yes."

"Where are you right now?" I asked.

"I'm on the bus. We're parked outside of the venue. I have soundcheck in an hour."

"Do you have a guitar?"

"Yeah, I have Josephine right here next to me."

I smiled at the thought of that matte black Fender I bought him all those years ago. I had named her Josephine one night when he was playing for me, and it stuck.

"Play it for me," I said. "That Willie Nelson song. Do you know it?"

"Of course I know it. I feel like it's one of the ten songs in life you're required to know."

"What, no, like with Happy Birthday and Twinkle Twinkle?" I asked in a disbelieving tone.
