"I didn't tell anyone," I said. "One, somebody would have told Micah. And two, I don't… I'm still not sure if it's the right one. I had it worked on, though. Let me just say that I bought it, and I took it to a guy to restore and tune it up and everything—all that and I still have no certainty that it's your exact guitar. But I do currently have a Fender guitar with a Martin headstock. I can't wait to see if it's yours. I planned on giving it to you the next time I saw you, and I had no idea it would be tonight."

"Where is it?" my mother asked.

"Exactly!" Rita said. "It's probably in her apartment or her store, and either one is close."

"You are cracking me up, Birdy," I said, smiling and shaking my head at her. "It's upstairs, in my apartment."

"Micah's been here for three hours," Birdy said.

"How have you not gone up there to get it already?" my mom added.

All at the same time, at least three or four people yelled out different things, encouraging me to go get the guitar. I was already in motion to stand up and go get it, and their reactions made me laugh.

"I'll come with you," Jake said.

"Oh, okay," I agreed. I thought I would run upstairs alone, but I was fine with Jake coming with me. I looked at Micah. "Do you want to come?"

"No," JD said.

"Yeah, we want to see him get it," Isaac said.

"Okay, I'll just run up."

Jake was agitated the whole way upstairs.

I could feel him brooding.

I went into my apartment, trying to ignore his bad mood and focus on the really fun thing that was about to happen.

I had been looking for this guitar for so long that it seemed surreal that this transaction was about to take place. I was about to hand-deliver this bad boy to Micah's hands, and it was a crazy feeling.

"I'll run and grab it," I said once we got into my apartment. I left Jake in the living room and headed to my bedroom. I found the exact spot under my bed and pulled it out with no hesitation. It was in a case, and I didn't waste time or bother opening it. I had opened it at least a dozen times since I had it home. I knew exactly what was inside.

I smiled as I walked back into the living room.

"Why all the secrecy, Claire?"

"What secrecy?" I asked, trying to remain happy.

"Well, I mean, you're my… I thought you would have told me about the guitar. I didn't even know you were looking for a guitar for him. Why did he need a guitar? I don't get why it's a big deal."

I hadn't clued Jake in on the guitar before this, but it was a long story, and he usually didn't want me to go on about Micah, so I hadn't mentioned it.

"Oh. No. I didn't tell you about it because I knew it wouldn't be a big deal to you," I said, trying to remain happy and calm.

Jake made a face and an agitated sound, but I ignored it.

I would work this out later with Jake.

This moment in time had to be about Micah and this guitar. I was so excited to give it back to him that I easily ignored Jake's mood. I simply smiled at him and nudged my head like he should follow me.

"Just pull the door," I said from over my shoulder. "It'll lock behind you." I walked down the hallway and to the door that led to the stairway, feeling annoyed that he was walking slowly. "I’m moving fast since they're all waiting for me," I said.

Chapter 7

I went downstairs and through the hallway before walking back to the restaurant where everyone was still gathered. They were still sitting around the same group of tables, and they drew in close to look at the case I was carrying.

"I cannot believe it," Birdy said, "In all my days, I never thought you'd see that guitar again."
