"I wouldn't follow them around," I said. "And I wouldn't go to his girlfriend under false pretenses."

"Yeah, he's been on stage, talking about having a girlfriend recently."

I waved a little to make sure she knew that I was the girlfriend in question.

"I'm not trying to follow him. If he would just talk to me again, I would stop. I wanted to meet you to explain that. I would love it if you would please just tell him to call me back. I need to explain to him why I came across as a little overbearing back then. I was trying to get my meds straightened out, and—"

"I'll tell him," I said. "I'll tell him I talked to you and you're a genuine person and everything, but there's nothing to straighten out."

Tears rose to her eyes and her face crumpled as she began crying. She was pitiful, and I stared around us, feeling out of sorts, like I was on some kind of hidden camera television show.

"Listen, I feel for you," I said, getting to the edge of my seat in preparation to stand up. "But I'm not the right person to talk to about any of this. Micah and I… we've been together a long time, and I'm protective of him. I can appreciate your sincerity, and I'm happy you're a nice person, but not every relationship works out in life. I have guys who I used to be friends with and don't talk to anymore. The same with girls. Sometimes people come into and out of our life."

She was looking down and crying, and I stood up.

"I'll tell him you said congratulations and that you want the best for him."

She nodded as she continued to cry, and I walked out of there without looking back.

What a trip. It was a fancy restaurant, she was decked out in designer clothes as she sat there and broke down. I wasn't scared of her at all. She was pitiful, and I felt bad for her, but I knew it was best for me to walk away.

My heart ached from the encounter, and then I remembered that I was reaping the seeds I had sewn. Micah would've never even talked to this woman if I had known how much I loved him a year or two ago.

I talked to Micah that night, and I told myself that I was not going to mention it, but I couldn’t help it. It had only been a couple of hours since my interaction with her, and it was still on my mind.

"I talked to that Zoey Hendricks woman today," I said.

"When? How?"

"She came to Seattle," I said. "She made an appointment with me through work. She talked to Allison and told her she wanted to do a featured consignment with my clothes in her store."

"She lied to you? Did you meet her? Are you okay?" He sounded worried.

"I'm fine," I said. I smiled so that he could hear it in my voice. "I wasn't telling you because I was worried. I talked to her, and it went fine."

"What do you mean it went fine?"

"She's just a person with feelings," I said. "She likes you and she's embarrassed, and I definitely don't think she wants to hurt you. And as much as she doesn't want to see us together, she also doesn't want to hurt me."

"Yeah, that's fine, but I don't want her calling you, or talking to you, or going to Seattle at all."

"She's not," I said. "I really think she just wanted to talk to me and see if she had a chance with you."

"She doesn't," he said.

"I was as nice as I could be, but I told her that."

"Claire, I am so sorry."

"No, I'm sorry," I said. "You should have had a girlfriend years ago."

He was quiet for a second. "In my heart, I did."

"Was she me?" I asked, quietly flirting with him.

"You know she is. Do you promise you're not scared? Because Aiden was saying that her mom would turn her credit card off if she knew she was following me."

"I think she'll stop, anyway," I said. "She kind of looked like she got the picture."
