Isaac was unapologetic and easy, and even if Kathy would have wanted to be annoyed, she couldn’t be. She smiled at Isaac. Her smile faded slightly when she shifted to stare at me, but I was happy with how things were going. It felt like I was going to get to keep my job while continuing to see Isaac.

Kathy had something to grab and was only at the studio for a minute. Part of me thought she had come there on a fake errand since her house was about thirty minutes away and she usually only made the trip when it was necessary. It didn't matter much to me.

Kathy walked out, and I looked at Isaac.

We didn't say anything as we made our way back toward the candy canes.

"That was amazing," I said, feeling so happy.

He glanced at me. "What was?"

"You. Kathy was ready to be mad when she came in here. She was definitely close to mad. But then you turned on the charm, and she left here smiling and basically thanking you for being here. It was beautiful."

"I didn’t turn anything on yet," he said, casually. "But I can, if you come here for a second." Isaac reached out for me, and I jumped to the side, dodging his grasp. He grinned and stooped suddenly like he might give chase.

"Hang on," I said, trying not to laugh nervously. "There are cameras in every room except for the hallway."

"Are we being listened to?" he asked.

I shook my head. "Just watched," I assured him.

I grabbed his hand and walked thirty feet or so through the end of one room and into a hallway that led to other rooms.

"The hallways are private," I said. "There are cameras in most of the other rooms, but I'll show you where it's camera-free."

I stopped in the hallway, and glanced around us, looking upward, showing that there weren't any cameras. Isaac leaned in and went for me, kissing my neck. I hadn't been looking up to bait him, but he took it as an invitation, anyway, and it was wonderful. His mouth touched me gently on what was a vulnerable, sensitive area, and I felt like I might actually melt. I took a long, uneven breath and backed up a foot or two to lean against a wall. Isaac advanced, coming right up to me, trapping me against the wall.

It was one of those moments I wished I could freeze in time. It might have been the first time in my whole life that I could say I'd be content if time stopped right there. Isaac was tall and broad, and he leaned into me causing me to be pressed gloriously against the hard walls of the studio hallway.

"Just tell her I'm your boyfriend next time," he said. He still held me against the wall, and I easily stayed there, leaning against it, not wanting to leave.

"How?"

"I don't know. Just open your mouth and say it. I don't know why we don't just tell people. I feel like we're past pretending. I know your family doesn’t know about the book. None of your people do. They're all so far behind."

I put my hand on the side of his face, staring into his unbelievable green eyes.

"They really are," I agreed.

"So, can we just be honest, maybe? Because that was difficult just now. I know you need to act a certain way with her because she's your boss, but as far as I'm concerned, everyone else can know." He let his face brush against mine so gently that I stopped breathing.

"They can?" I asked breathlessly.

"Yes, they can." Isaac spoke so slowly that I felt like I might cry. He was torturously close to me, but he wasn't kissing me. His body was against mine and his face was only an inch away. He moved, shifting and looking at me like he was checking me out.

"Isaac?"

"What, Ari?" his voice was soft and sticky. We were soft and sticky. The whole moment had me melting.

"I'm fine telling people you're my boyfriend if that's what you are."

"What do you mean, if that's what I am?"

"Is that what we are to each other?" I asked.

"Do you think I would fly across the country and get a hotel and a Tesla to see my not-girlfriend? Do you think I stand like this in cameraless hallways with my not-girlfriend?" He pressed his body against mine, and I smiled at him.

"I hope not," I said. "So, it's decided? I'm somebody's girlfriend now?"
