"Are you in some kind of cult?" she asked, looking me over warily.

"No, no, no, I'm just a Christian." I put my hands in the air and took a tiny step toward her instead of away. "Look, I don't know what's going to happen with all of this, but I want you to know that it's not too late to make everything right. God forgives you. He knows our worst, and He forgives us."

"Don't come any closer," she warned.

I stopped walking.

"You're kidding me right now with all this religious talk. What in the world could Alec possibly see in you?" She spoke through gritted teeth and cussed a lot. "I was seriously going to kill you before you made it about… and now you went and…just throw me your keys right now!" She yelled angrily at me and shook the gun at me like I wasn't moving fast enough.

"The keys are… in the Jeep," I said, getting the words out as quickly as I could.

She told me, as she moved to get into my Jeep, to stay where I was and not try to come near her. She made me sit on the ground with my hands on my head while she got inside. She then said some really mean things about me and my appearance and how a stupid, homely missionary like me didn't deserve Alec. She said things that were so hurtful they seemed prepared long ago. The insults rolled off of her tongue with no effort at all. I listened to her spout off a bunch of profanities and insults as she got into my Jeep, made a three-point turn, and went back the way we came. I thought she was going to hit me at first. She came close. But she blew past me, bawling her eyes out.

The road was curved, but I could see her car in the distance. I watched as she got out of my Jeep. It looked like she threw something into the reeds on the side of the road before switching vehicles. I got to my feet, watching to make sure she wasn't going to come back.
