"I don't need to. I just said I was going to do that to get a minute alone. Plus, I need to throw this away." I raised my clenched fist.

"Sorry I followed you," he said apologetically.

"I wanted you to," I replied. I spoke in a shy tone, and I was leaning into him, flirting with him.

"Grace, I don't want you to say it back to me, but in light of everything you've done and been through today, I think it's okay for me to tell you that I love you. Today didn't make me love you. I've been loving you. Today just made me say it. Like I said, I'm not asking you to say it back. But I do love you. I love your reaction to everything you've been through today, and I just think it's fitting that I tell you that. You're just there, holding steady, ready for anything. you're a solid rock, Grace. I can't imagine my life without you in it. I'm going to still keep waiting if you need me to. But I want you. You should know that if you want me, too, all you have to do is say the word."

"What word?" I said.

"You better stop looking at me like that," he warned.

"What word?" I repeated. I gazed into his eyes. "What is the word? Because I want to say it." I touched his chest, letting my fingertips hit the skin at the base of his neck.

He ducked and our lips made contact five or so times, gentle, sweet, caring, controlled kisses.

"I've never loved anyone other than you, Alec. I will always (kiss) ever (kiss) only (kisssss) love (kiss) only you, Alec."

"I wrote a song called Grace," he whispered.

I pulled back to look at him.

"You did?"

He nodded.

"A worship song?"

His mouth turned upward in a grin. "No." He gave me a smile that was so mischievous I began to blush. "It's a love song, a rock song. One I'll do with the band—a ballad that talks about me and my girl." He leaned in and kissed me again—a rough kiss where his stubble rubbed against my skin. I took a deep breath when he pulled back. I could stay there in his arms forever.

"And it's about me?" I asked.

He nodded.

"When did you write it?"

"Months ago."

I ran my fingertips along his muscular arm, touching his skin.

"Did you show it to anyone yet?" I asked.

"No, I didn't."

"Why didn't you show it to me sooner? Why are you just now telling me about it?" I asked.

"Because I was trying to be y-your friend, and now, well, you're looking at me like this, so I thought maybe I'm not your friend anymore."

"Am I looking at you a certain way?" I asked innocently.

Alec nudged his chin at me. "Yeah, you are looking at me a certain way," he said, speaking quietly and without emotion.

I grinned.

"You know you are," Alec added.

"I guess I am," I said.

"Yeah, so that's why I'm telling you about the song. I'll play it for you later tonight, and then I'll show it to my brother."
