"And you want me to pretend to be your fake boyfriend?" he assumed, looking uncertain.

"Yes. Could you? Is that asking too much? I'm sorry. It's enough that you hooked me up with a place to stay this summer. I don't mean to put you on the spot tonight. It's just if you wanted to get closer to the stage, basically, and come up there to the front."

"Why don't you just tell him you're not interested? Why do you feel like you have to lie?"

"Because if I don't say I have a boyfriend, he'll continually think he has a chance. We have mutual friends and it's better for me to just say I'm off the market. But don't worry, you and I are not going to end up together in real life. That's not going to happen."

"I know that for sure," he said. "I would never date someone like you."

"Thanks a lot," I said, making a silly face but being sarcastic.

"No, it's just that, you just… scare me." He said the words so hesitantly that I laughed and hugged him.

"I scare you?" I asked, pulling back and looking at him in the eyes. "How?"

"You don't scare me as a person. I would just never be able to… my brother is the type of guy who you'd be better for."

I made a funny expression at him for saying that.

"My brother is the ladies' man. I'm just here to watch the band."

I could tell he was serious—that he was not the least bit interested in hooking up. I liked Beau. I liked him as a friend, and I was thankful and relieved that he didn't mind staying in that zone.

"You don't need to worry about coming over there. It was just a thought because Cameron's next to me all night and I saw you were alone."

"That's my last name," he said.

"What is?"

"Cameron."

"I thought it was Morgan."

"That's my mom's last name. And my Uncle's. But I'm Cameron."

"Beau Cameron?"

"Yep."

"Nice officially meeting you," I said. "I’m sorry for asking you to do that."

"I'll do it," he said. "If it'll make him leave you alone, I don't mind doing it. You're coming back to Chicago after the summer. It's probably better if he thinks you really have a boyfriend."

"It would be amazing, but don't feel obligated. I know it's a lot to ask. I don't owe that guy an explanation, though."

"Well, what did you have in mind?"

"I was just going to stand next to you and maybe whisper in your ear so he would get the idea that you were my boyfriend. I wasn't necessarily going to introduce you to anyone."

"I'll do that," he agreed. "I'll walk over there and pretend for a minute. Do you want me to go now?"

Beau Cameron was the type of guy who had his whole life together—the type who was confident enough to go to a concert by himself. He had a plan to travel the world and a nice steady job waiting for him when he finished. He probably had his own health insurance. I knew I shouldn't have asked him to be my fake boyfriend. I regretted asking him at all. I shrugged casually.

"You don't have to come. It's really no biggie."

"How many people are over there with you? Is there like twenty people?"

"No. I met a few friends up here. It's crowded, though, so if you change your mind, don't feel bad. I really do appreciate your help with the cabin arrangements."
