Constance let out a heavy sigh. “You’re probably right.”

One more thing to add to his growing list of reasons Constance was a far better match for him than Brielle had been. It had gotten to a point where he’d started to wonder what he’d ever seen in the older Callahan sister.

Besides the excitement in the beginning from sneaking around and having the attention of a beautiful woman, she wasn’t suited for him nearly as well as Constance appeared to be.

“What about you?”

She was now a few feet ahead of him and she lifted a brow when she glanced over her shoulder toward him. “What about me, what?”

“Have you told anyone about where you are tonight? Or rather, who you are with?”

Her body stiffened.

“Who would I have told?”

“Your sisters?” Of course she wouldn’t have told her father. Perhaps she had a friend she might have told.

Constance shook her head. “No.” Then she nodded. “Actually, I don’t know why I said that. I did mention it.”

His steps slowed as he stared at the back of her head. He willed her to turn around and make eye contact with him, to elaborate on who she told. But she didn’t. “Do you want to talk about it?”

A sigh escaped her and she stopped. “Does it matter? I’d rather we enjoy our time together than talk about my family.”

James closed the distance between them and reached for her hand. His fingers laced within hers and he squeezed reassuringly. “Sure. Whatever you want. How about you tell me something I don’t know about you?”

“Yeah? Like what?”

Momentarily distracted by how good it felt to have her hand in his, James didn’t respond right away.

“James?”

He shot a look at her. “I don’t know. Like what your favorite food is. Or where you went the first time you left the state.” He couldn’t help himself. James chuckled as he wagged his eyebrows. “Or your first kiss.” James had expected her to brush him off, at least on that last one. Instead, she surprised him.

“I love tacos. I’ve never left the state. And you were my first kiss.”

He coughed, choking as he sucked in an unexpected breath. “You’re kidding.”

Constance laughed. “I like this game. Your turn.”

He adjusted the basket in his hand. “I don’t have a favorite food—not really. I’ll eat about anything you put in front of me. I crossed the border into Wyoming the first time I left the state. And my first kiss was B—” He coughed again, catching himself before he said the wrong thing. “Before I can remember.”

She smirked at him. “You can’t tell me that you kissed a girl when you were a child. You’re not one ofthosekids, are you?”

“Would that be so bad?”

Another soft laugh filled the air, giving him a pleasant sensation of chills and warmth. She hadn’t pulled her hand from his, giving the illusion that they were more than he knew them to be. “Should I be jealous?”

He tugged her to a stop, forcing her to turn around to face him. She gasped as his expression turned serious. “You will never have a reason to be jealous. I’ve only kissed you once and I can say with complete honesty that there is no one quite like you.” She was the girl of his dreams. It was just too bad that it had taken actually kissing her to realize that. Each second that passed while being in her presence only solidified his opinion.

She rolled her eyes and laughed.

“Don’t do that,” he said, nudging her.

Constance sobered. “Don’t do what?”

“Act like I’m just saying these things to get a reaction out of you. I’m not. Everything I’m saying is true.” He searched her gaze, praying he might find anything that showed she believed him.

But there was nothing. Her confidence still needed support. His gaze dipped to her lips, and before he had a chance to slow down and really consider the consequences of what he wanted to do, he leaned forward and kissed her for the second time that evening.
