Constance’s hand gripped her pajamas tightly in a fist and she spun around. “I’m going to go change.”

Brielle folded her arms, still leaning against the door. “Not until you tell me what happened.”

“I don’t see why that matters. You got what you wanted.”

“What isthatsupposed to mean?”

“I’m not in a relationship with James anymore. That’s what you wanted, right?”

Brielle’s gaze bounced to Dianna and then back to Constance. She didn’t deny it, which caused a huff to burst from Constance’s lips. “See? I knew you didn’t approve of him. Though I can’t figure out if you don’t approve of him specifically or if it would have bothered you had I dated anyone.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Isn’t it?” Constance spat at her. “You never liked him. So now you’re the only one who gets to go on dates.” She motioned toward the door. “Now, can I go?”

Brielle sighed. “It’s not what you think. I don’t care if you want to find and fall in love with someone—”

“Just notJames.”

At some point, Dianna had gotten up from her seat and moved across the room. From the sound of it, she stood about a foot behind Constance.

Brielle shifted her weight from one foot to the other. She gnawed on her lower lip as if the conversation had made her uncomfortable. She’d been caught being selfish, and Constance didn’t have the heart to coddle her.

The only person who had a broken heart right now was Constance. And right now, all she wanted to do was lick her wounds and try to prepare for the next time she had to come face to face with the only other person who might feel the same as she did.

“Please, Bri. Can we just drop this? None of it matters anymore.”

Brielle took a step forward. “But it does matter. As much as I thought James wasn’t a good fit for you, I still don’t want to see you hurting.” She sighed. “You deserve to be happy—”

“If you really felt that way, there are so many things you could have done to prevent this.” Constance shook her head. “You know what? Nevermind. I’m not going to get into this with you.”

Brielle moved forward again. “What do you want me to do?”

Constance pushed past Brielle, her escape finally unguarded. She pulled open the door and hurried down the hall before Brielle could stop her again. She took her time changing, brushing her hair and cleaning the mascara from her cheeks. After a splash of cool water, she felt more prepared to return to her room.

Brielle was probably lying in wait—ready to bombard her with more questions or to give her false statements of empathy.

Her steps slowed as she approached her room, her ears straining for any sound to indicate that Brielle was still in there with Dianna. And she wasn’t disappointed.

“Do you think she knows?” Dianna murmured.

“It doesn’t matter anymore. She broke up with him,” Brielle’s quiet voice snapped back.

Constance froze, her hand reaching for the door. Her ears burned. What was Dianna talking about? Was there some kind of secret that James had kept from her? And how would Brielle know?

“You’re going to have to tell her at some point. You know that, right?”

Brielle sighed. “I thought I might. But maybe not.”

“Bri—”

“Shh. She’s just down the hall.”

Constance’s face burned and she stepped back, leaning against the wall. Until this point she didn’t think things could get any worse. Now she had lost the man she loved and the security she’d had.

“If you don’t tell her, I will. She’s already broken up with him.”

“Exactly. She’s already upset. Why would I want to make everything worse by telling her that I dated James?”
