“It’s a good thing I’m head over heels in love with you,” he murmured as his arms slipped around her waist and he pressed his forehead to hers.

“I couldn’t have said it better myself.”

Dianna let out an exaggerated groan and headed toward the exit. “You too are so mushy.”

EPILOGUE

James

James stood on his toes and his heart nearly leapt out of his chest as the ladder beneath his feet tipped slightly. His hands gripped the edge of the barn roof while he waited for his heart to find its rightful place.

“Be careful,” Constance demanded from her safe place on firm earth.

He shot her a dark look. “Maybe you should be the one to come up here and put up the Christmas lights.”

“Shane didn’t ask me. He asked you.” She smirked.

He didn’t even know why he’d agreed to help out. It wasn’t like anyone was going to come out to get therapeutic services this coming month. People spent time with their families during the month of December. Shane was putting on a show for nothing.

James attached the strand of lights where it needed to be and then carefully climbed down. They’d decorated every structure on the premises when Shane had more than enough money to hire a crew.

Constance stepped aside as he finally made it safely to the snow-covered ground.

“What plans did Shane say he had for next month?”

Constance held out a new strand of lights and motioned toward the nearest corral. “What do you mean?”

“He said he wanted to turn this place into some kind of Christmas getaway. I just don’t see why anyone in their right minds would want to come out here in the cold and—”

“Shane has a lot of things planned. Besides the regular therapeutic services, he’s going to have sleigh rides, ice-skating at the pond, Christmas Cookie stations at the club—”

“Okay, I get it. He wants to turn this place into a glorified North Pole.”

Constance’s eyes brightened. “That’s an awesome idea. You should tell him that’s what he should call it.”

He shook his head. “I was kidding. I told you, I don’t think anyone is going to come here—”

Snow flung everywhere as Dianna came running toward them. “James! Shane wants your help putting up the big sleigh and reindeer set on the roof at the club.”

James fought back the urge to groan as Constance giggled. He spun around, crouching like a predator. “Oh, you think this is funny, do you?”

Her eyes widened and she laughed again. “He’syourfriend. It’s not my fault that you are so willing to volunteer when he asks you to.”

He stalked toward her, and she squealed as she dropped another coiled string of lights and darted toward the club. James easily closed the distance, quickly grabbing her and tumbling to the snow together. His face hovered over hers, snow in her hair and eyes bright. This was his future wife, the future mother of his children, his whole reason for living.

James dipped and kissed the tip of her nose, only to be interrupted by Dianna clearing her throat once more.

She had her arms folded and she was tapping her toe. “I think I told you that Shane needs your help.”

He rolled off Constance and got to his feet, dusting the powdery snow from his clothes with a chuckle. “I’m coming, I’m coming.”

Constance lifted herself up on her elbows, a wide smile stretching from one side of her face to the other. “Speaking of Shane, you two seem to be getting along really well.”

Dianna wrinkled her nose. “Don’t even think about it. Shane is definitely not my type.”

James chuckled. “You never know. Sometimes you bump into a person you’ve never met and bam, it hits you—you know you’re going to marry them from that very second. Other times,” he said as he reached down to help Constance to her feet, “you look into the eyes of someone you feel you’ve known your whole life and little by little, you realize you could never live without them.”

Dianna rolled her eyes and stomped toward the club, muttering under her breath. “When is this lovey-dovey stuff going to end?”
