He nodded once. “Want me to come with you? You shouldn’t be alone, Gabs.”

I glanced around to see that he’d been busy while I was on the phone. The horses were back in their stalls, and everything appeared to be done.

“Um, if you don’t mind?”

I couldn’t admit out loud how scared I was, how much I didn’t want to drive into Houston alone.

“You need me, I’m there, Gabs. Just give me ten minutes to get cleaned up and changed, then we’ll head off. Okay?”

He took off my hat and pressed a kiss to my temple that melted my insides before returning my hat to my head.

“C’mon, beautiful, let’s go inside. You can grab yourself something to eat while I clean up.”
