Just as I thought this was a moment and he was going to kiss me, he said, “You want a picture? It’ll last longer and you can put it in your spank bank.”

I pushed away from him, wobbling before I got my footing. “You’d be the last person I’d think of while...spanking,” I told him as I started back up the steps. Which was a blatant lie. He was the first.

“You wouldn’t be able to handle me anyway,” he said, his voice rough with dark humour.

I stopped and he ran into the back of me. I turned and found him looking at me in amusement.

“I doubt the big, bad wolf’s bite is anywhere near as bad as hethinkshisbark is.”

He leant in close to me, our eyes a lot closer than usual due to my being higher up the steps than him. His eyes were hard. His jaw was clenched.

“I would ruin you,” he promised, and an excited tingle shot through my spine.

“Doubtful.”

He snarled and yet somehow it was still sinfully sexy. “I would break you. It’s almost a shame you’re not to be broken.”

“Almost,” I agreed with saccharine sweet sarcasm. “I always thought you liked the challenge of breaking them in. Theharderthe better.” I looked him over. “Or are you going soft?”

“You want to throw around words like hard and soft, I’ll take you back to Apollo.”

I laughed. “Am I making you uncomfortable?”

He got right in my face. “If you need to let off steam, I’m sure he’s ready for the next round by now.

“No doubt he has another Magdalen lined up.”

His smirk was anything but nice. “I’m sure he’ll let you join in.”

“Watch and learn? I don’t think so, thanks. I might go find myself a real man.” I paused so my next words hit him at home. “I certainly don’t see one around here.”

Valen growled. His hand went to my neck as he bared down on me. Something told me I was supposed to be afraid of him. But I wasn’t. I liked it. I felt the challenge in my eyes. I saw what could have almost been an answer in his.

“You’ll go back to your room or Apollo’s. Up to you.”

I held my chin high. “Third option. Bit out of left field. No.”

“I’m taking you back to Apollo.”

“Why?” I laughed. “It’s not like I’ve got anything he wants. Not yet anyway.”

Confusion flashed in his eyes. “I don’t give a fuck if you two are having a dry spell. That’s between you two.”

“Is it still dry spell if there’sneverbeen any rain?” I asked him, my eyebrows raising.

While he was standing in stunned silence, I turned on my heel and walked away.

“You don’t walk away from me,” he growled, jogging to catch me up.

I looked down at my feet. “It seems I do,” I said in mock surprise.

He grabbed my arm again and electricity shot through me at his touch. He pulled me to face him and, even with his eyes piercing hatred into mine and his face hard and unforgiving, I couldn’t help my attraction to him. My stomach twisted itself into pleasant knots and I had to fight to keep my breathing even. Almost like, the more he hated me, the more I wanted him.

We’d never argued like this, Valen and I. I barely argued with anyone except Florence, and arguments about which Salvatore brother was better hardly counted as a real argument. I’d been brought up to be the polite little society darling, always saying and doing the right thing, only ever leaving anyone with the impression that I was ‘such a nice girl’. My insides had never matched my outsides, but I played my role like the good little princess I was supposed to be and hoped that I wasn’t the cause of anyone’s untimely deaths.

But, quite frankly, seeing Apollo in the throes of carnal pleasure and now being too close to Valen for too long was frying those brain cells that were usually so good at ensuring my survival. I was hot and bothered. I wanted release. I needed a cool shower and enough time alone to cum hard enough to satisfy my cravings, inevitably picturing the man with his hand currently wrapped around my arm.

“You do not want to test my restraint, Miss Vanguard,” he hissed.
