He nodded. “If I let you.”

The noise of an arriving celebration forced us apart. Under Valen’s firm, watchful gaze, I put his cross back on and tucked it into my shirt. He gave me one nod, and then he was God’s wolf for the rest of the night. Marco found me, with an earful about Apollo leaving me, and then made sure no one left my side for the rest of the night.

Chapter Six

Unsurprisingly, Valen was no where to be seen on Monday, although Fender told me he was in the infirmary hopped up on that much morphine that he’d be seeing the fucking Loch Ness Monster dancing through his room.

On Tuesday, he was greeted at breakfast with a cheer from the majority of the dining hall.

“What did I miss?” Florence asked, having only got back late the night before.

I hadn’t really filled her in on any of the weekend because I didn’t know how to tell her some of it without telling her all of it. And Valen’s express instructions had been to tell no one about Saturday. I didn’t like keeping things from my best friend, but I felt, in this situation, maybe it was for the better. Especially when I didn’t really understand it myself.

“Valk took down a fucking monster on Sunday,” Fender said.

Florence blinked. “Literally…or?”

Marco grinned at her. “Almost. He won our God a good-sized bet.”

Fender inclined his head at Marco. “Cundy saw more of the winnings than he would have had Peskov won.”

Florence looked at me, but didn’t lean over until the boys were distracted welcoming Valen in. Valen, who looked like he’d much rather everyone fucked right off.

“They don’t talk about these things with us. Why are they talking about these things with us?” She leant away, gasped, then leant even closer. “Did you finally fuck God?”

I smirked. “Apparently I’m more invisible?”

She frowned. “How the fuck does that work?”

I shrugged. “Some weird psychological bullshit that lets the men-folk think we women don’t know anything.”

“Ah.” She nodded. “Gotcha.” She seemed to think of something and leant back in again. “Didyou fuck God, though?”

I looked at the God in question, who was making a whole bunch of grand gestures about an increasingly angry Valen in front of the whole dining hall.

“No.”

“Why does this piss us off?” Florence asked.

“Because it almost happened on Saturday, but instead he stormed off.”

She frowned around the toast in her mouth. “What? Why?”

“I don’t know, but I plan to get to the bottom of it.”

Florence breathed out. “Honestly, I might not even go on the next retreat. Fuck Paris. I don’t wanna miss the drama here.”

I smiled, knowing her words for the attempted cheer-up they were. “You’re going to fucking Paris.”

She nodded. “I’m going to fuck in Paris,” she said, as though repeating my words.

I laughed, feeling like the first time in a good few days. But I was still determined to find out why Apollo had left. Fuck Paris? Fuck this me and Apollo not talking bullshit. I wanted answers and I was going to get them.

So, I strode purposefully down the boys’ dorm hall after lessons that day. Fender was at Apollo’s door, presumably on sentry duty, and tried to bar my way.

“You do not want to fuck with me right now, Fender,” I warned him.

I saw a new-found respect light his eyes, but he only said, “I can’t let you in, Miss Vanguard.”
