“We’ve all killed for our God, princess,” he said, his voice low but I couldn’t tell if it was a warning or a threat. “But would we kill for you?”

Valen appeared behind him, a scowl on his face. “Get moving,” he snapped.

Gage looked like he was going to argue, then just nodded his head and walked out.

“You, too,” Valen said to me, flipping his hood up over his head and leading me to the service stairs.

He exuded anger and retribution, and I was worried about what they had planned. In the safety of the service stairs, when I put my hand on his arm, he whirled quickly and pressed me against the wall.

“What, princess?” he asked before I could say anything. “What information do you feel the unrelenting need to rip from my unwilling lips tonight?”

“Loquacious today,” I quipped, and he snarled.

His hand snaked around my throat and fuck had I missed it. “What do you want?” he ground out.

“I just want you to be safe.”

“Death will be my only safety, princess.”

“Valen–”

“What?” he yelled, pulling away from me. “What, Harlow?”

“What is up with you?”

“With me? Nothing’s up with me.”

“Then why are you extra pissy right now?”

He slammed his fist on the wall opposite me, then stormed to crowd into my space. “You will be Apollo’s. He will claim you.”

Now didn’t feel like the time to tell him it had already happened. There was too much swirling between Valen and me to think about Apollo and me. I could smell everything that Valen was, and it made my blood sing. I could feel his body humming with barely restrained fury mere inches from me and my senses awoke. His clothes brushed mine and my fingers itched to drag them off him.

I should have told him about Apollo.

“And what if I want you?” was what I said instead.

He paused. “I thought you fucked me out of your system?”

“Well, clearly I didn’t,” I snapped.

I was beyond pretending I was over Valen. That I’d ever be over Valen. I didn’t know how I could be so drawn to two men at the same time, seemingly for such very different reasons and in different ways. All I knew was that I needed Valen. I wanted Apollo, but I needed Valen. Apollo was a rich Victorian Sponge cake. Valen was air and water.

He looked me over. “Why?” he asked quietly.

I didn’t think he was asking about the current conversation. “Why what?”

“That Magdalen today. You let him fuck around for so long. What’s changed now?”

“Because I didn’t have a way out, Valen. I still don’t have a way out and now Apollo’s…complicating things.” I lay my hand on his cheek. “But I need you. At least for as long as I can have you.”

His jaw clenched. “Bad idea, princess,” he said.

“I know,” I said softly. “But I can’t stop.”

He dropped his forehead to mine with a gentle growl. “Neither can I.”

“What are we going to do?” I asked him.
