“You okay, Miss Vanguard?” he asked.

I blinked. “Uh, yes. You don’t know where Marco and Valen are do you?”

He nodded. “You’re in luck. They’re training in the gym.”

“The Saint Benedicts’ gym?”

He snorted. “Fuck, no. The Angels have their own. Basement.”

I nodded. “Great. Thanks, Fender.”

“No worries.”

I turned and headed for the lift.

“I’ll need to let you down,” Fender said, and I turned back to him in confusion. He kicked his head toward the lift. “The elevator. The basement needs a code.”

“Oh!” I said. “Oh, okay.”

Fender smirked at me like he’d forgive my ignorance just this once, then led me to the lift. He called it for me and then nodded for me to get in when the doors opened. I stepped in and he leant towards the control panel.

“No looking now,” he warned me with a wink. I dutifully looked away until he said, “There you are now.”

I smiled at him. “Thank you, Fender.”

He touched his hand to his head. “My pleasure, Miss Vanguard.”

Anxiety gnawed at me the whole ride down, despite it being a short trip.

I stepped out of the lift and saw Marco and Valen sparring. Neither of them was in anything more than a loose pair of shorts with their hands taped. They were both sweaty but, as physically pleasing as Marco was to look at, I couldn’t take my eyes off the sheen on Valen’s body. The muscles rippling. The barely constrained force he could wield.

“Next time, hit me like you mean it,” Marco was saying sarcastically as though Valen had just hit him quite incredibly.

“Youwannavisit the doc again?” Valen asked, with a sexily wry smirk to his lips.

“Wouldn’t mind an excuse. Always wanted a go with an older woman.”

“She’d wipe the floor with you.”

“More’n can be said for your piss weak love pats,” Marco said, clearly goading Valen.

Valen swung his hand back and, “We need to talk,” exploded out of me.

They both looked at me as Valen’s fist crashed into Marco’s face.

“Oi!” Marco said to him, and he shrugged.

“What do you want?” Valen asked.

“Is everything all right?” Marco asked, worrying about me now.

I nodded to Marco. “Yes. Everything’s…okay. I just… Can I talk to Valen? Alone?”

Valen’s nostrils actually flared as he looked at me, as though how dare I come into his house and make demands. And more to the point, how dare I make demands in front of Marco.

Marco nodded slowly. “Sure. I’ll just be…upstairs if you need me.”

“Lock it on your way up,” Valen said sternly.
