“I’m trying to work out if you’re the sort of man to offer a future, Valen,” I said, and he frowned in confusion. “I fell in love with a man who couldn’t–”

“The man you fell in love withcouldn’t, but he wanted to. I always wanted it, Harlow. Before you, the idea of marriage, kids… It was nothing I thought twice about. I was told I couldn’t have it, but I didn’t want it or need it. Then there was you and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. You in a white dress. Just for me.” He ran his hand over my stomach. “Pregnant with my baby. I tried to stop, but I’d never wanted anything more than I wanted us.”

I’d thought we weren’t the type for romantic soliloquies, but maybe we could be. They definitely were nice.

I thought of something. “That day you thought I was going to tell you I was pregnant…?”

A rueful smile lit his eyes. “They would have lined up to kill me, but I’d have died happy.”

I couldn’t help smiling. “Really? Why?”

His eyes were soft as he looked me over. “Because I’d have had a claim to you, love. It was foolish to think it, but I was ready to face any consequence of our actions. Had there been any.”

“I’m not ready for kids, Valen…”

He gave me a soft smile. “Neither am I, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t accept them if they happened.”

“And these kids…” I started.

“Mm…?” he asked as he put his arm around my waist.

I leant my hand on his chest. “Whether I’m with you or forced to marry Apollo, I’ll be expected to have kids.”

His nose dipped to my hair. “You will,” he murmured.

“You’d really be their father? They wouldn’t be considered…unworthy?”

“My da can think what he likes about it,” Valen said vehemently, holding me closer. “Any child I have will be half Kincaid and half Vanguard. I can’t think of a stronger pairing.”

“Are you just saying that because you love me?”

“I love you because you’re strong, Harlow. You’re fearless.”

I shook my head. “I’m not fearless, Valen.”

“Why would you say that?”

I looked up at him. “Because I’m afraid of what my life looks like – feels like – without you, but I’m also afraid of how my life looks if I’m forced to marry Apollo. A man like you playing mistress?”

He scoffed, a smile playing at his lips. “Love, I will be anything for you.”

I raised my eyebrow. “Anything?”

He nodded. “Anything. I came to you, princess, you’re in charge.”

I gave him a wry smirk and pushed him onto the couch behind him before crawling into his lap. His hands slipped under my pyjama top and gripped my waist firmly.

I leant forward to whisper in his ear, “You will have me screaming your name. You will make me cum, but even then you will thrust deep into me. Relentlessly. You will be so deep inside me that I’ll never forget the feel of you. And you won’t stop until you’ve given me every ounce of pleasure my body can handle.” I lay my hand over his throat. “Understood?”

He nodded eagerly. “Understood.”

I rubbed myself over him as I nipped his earlobe. “And you will not touch any woman other than me,” I commanded.

“Never,” he breathed as we rocked together.

I put my finger under his chin and stared into his eyes. “And you will tell me at least three times a day that you love me.”

Humour lit his eyes, but he nodded. “At least.”
