And if that didn’t say stupid crush, nothing did.

As it was, she did not ask questions.

On Tuesday someone named Gloria called her and asked for her bio. “I just need a sentence or two. For the statements.”

Then she received several emails of documents that needed her electronic signature. Most of them NDAs.

Then a man named Curtis called her and made sure she understood that under no circumstances whatsoever was she allowed to think of this event as a promise, date, courtship, or otherwise romantic entanglement. That she was Mr. Capone’s guest and would have certain privileges that would immediately be revoked if she even so much as thought about Mr. Capone in a romantic way. He had a document for her to sign about that as well.

At which point she finally broke down and called Dave. For the first time.

They had texted often enough that she shouldn’t have been as nervous as she was to call him.

But calling was different from texting.

Texting was saying, “hey, not to bother you but when you get a minute here’s a question.” Calling was more like, “answer me now.”

Which was a lot pushier than she liked to be.

Especially with a cute boy.

Wait. Who said that?

Anyway, he’d answered and that’s when she’d found out about the private plane and the fact that she needed the entire weekend off, not just Saturday night.

Again, she blamed herself.

Any Google search would have told her that the NMAs were in L.A. Common sense would then dictate that they would have to leave sometime before the event started.

She really had no excuse for why she was so taken off guard.

After a very evasive conversation with Big Mike about why she couldn’t work that weekend, she’d packed a bag.

Well, Kara had packed the bag. Sabine had paced.

The small airport came into view and Sabine peered through the front window.

“I had no idea this airport even existed,” she muttered.

“There are actually twelve active airports in the Chicago area,” Darius informed her.

“Oh.” Silly her, she only knew of the two major ones. A thought occurred to her. “Are you coming with us?”

“Yes. Dallas and I will be accompanying you this weekend.”

For some reason that eased some of her nerves.

“Good. I’m glad.” She looked forward to Dallas’s calming presence. It steadied her. Plus, having security there made it feel less… intimate.

Darius flashed his Disney prince smile. “Nervous?”

Sabine blew out a breath. “Yes. But not for the reasons you might think.” She gazed at the jet waiting on the runway. “Have you ever liked someone more than you know you’re supposed to, but still can’t talk yourself out of it?”

Darius put the SUV into park and chuckled softly. “Maybe someday I’ll tell you about the time I fell in love with a thief.”

She swung her eyes around to him. “What happened?”

He grinned again, all teeth and blinding beauty. “I married her.”
