“You were at the NMAs.” Again, Sally stated instead of asked. Sally cleared her throat and cocked her head to the side. “Let me be more specific. You were at the NMAswithSunshine Capone. And then you were put on no less than four lists of ‘Best Dressed’ from that night.” Sally blinked at her.

Best dressed, huh?

Sabine tried not to smile but failed. Sally narrowed her eyes at her.

“Okay,” Sabine said, understanding that there would be no moving forward until she gave Sally something. “You may ask me three questions and then we have to get to work.”

Sally leaned forward eagerly. “Are you and Sunshine dating?”

“No.” Though he was currently asleep in her bed.Thatdetail she would not be sharing with the teenager. “We’re just friends.”

“Who dressed you?”

“Catherine Anne.” Sabine glanced down at the screen again. Wouldn’t they have included that in their best dressed blurbs?

Sally made a noise in the back of her throat. “But she only works in costume design. She doesn’t do celebrities. Or teachers.”

“I don’t know what to tell you. Da-er-Sunshine said she dresses him, and she told me what to wear. I just showed up.”

“Mm-hm.” Sally didn’t sound convinced but she moved on. She swiped on her tablet and another picture of her showed up. This time she was dancing with Zara Lorna at the afterparty.

“Are you and Zara Lorna friends?”

“We just hung out at the afterparty. I don’t have her phone number or anything.”

“Is she going to collaborate with Sunshine Capone?”

“You’ve hit your three-question limit,” Sabine said with a chuckle.

Sally snapped her fingers. “I was hoping you weren’t counting.”

“I appreciate your interest in my personal life, but I really don’t have any exclusive information to share. I’m still the person I was before you saw this picture.”

Sally’s eyebrows dipped and she slid the tablet back her direction. “Do you not know how cool you are?”

Sabine barked a laugh. “Excuse me?”

Sally’s face relaxed into a stunned expression. “Oh my god, you don’t know. That’s hilarious.” She picked up her tablet and started swiping and tapping furiously.

Sabine sighed and patted the table. “Okay, we really do need to get to work.”

“Just…one…second…” Sally chewed on her bottom lip. “Done.” She set the tablet down and reached for her laptop.

Sabine eyed the tablet, a question on her tongue. Did she want to know what the internet was saying about her?

No.

She really didn’t.

And not because she was afraid of them saying something, but because she knew who she was. She didn’t need to see how a stranger had parsed her identity down to tidbits.

Between students while she inhaled soup she’d bought at a deli, she decided to send Dave a message.

SABINE: Hey. You were sleeping when I left but I feel like we need to talk about why and how you were in my bed this morning.

DAVE: absolutely. Will you be at the studio later today?

SABINE: yes
