“You’re kidding.” Zara took another look at Sabine and her tablet. “You work here?” She looked back and forth between Dave and Sabine. “Is this real?”

Sabine finally let her eyes connect with Dave’s.

Oh.

There it was.

That sleepy, peaceful place where she always felt safe.

He smiled, but it was small and uncertain. He squeezed the back of his neck, and he did not stand up to greet her like his friends had.

That was fine.

And she was fine with it.

Just.

Fine.

“I thought you were a teacher,” Zara said.

“I am.” Sabine wagged her head back and forth. “But it doesn’t pay as much as I like to spend, so I work here most weekends.”

Zara’s eyes sharpened on her and her expression grew thoughtful.

Sabine inhaled and forced a bright smile.

“So what can I get for everyone so I can earn those tips I expect you all to drop on me tonight?”

She took orders from everyone and purposefully left Dave for last. She made her way around the room, pretending not to notice how she had to lookupat the two models to get their orders. They even smelled pretty. Like flowers and fairies and mystical faraway lands.

When all she needed was Dave’s order, she skirted the perimeter and made sure everyone else was thoroughly distracted.

“How about you, superstar?” she asked, taking a seat beside him on the couch.

“I feel like I haven’t seen you in a month.” His voice was rough; he reached for her and stopped. He tried a smile. “We need time. You and me.”

Annnnd she was goo.

See? This was why they needed to have a conversation about all the things. Because when it was just them, it seemed way too effortless and simple. It wasn’t confusing until she started trying to figure out where she fit in his life.

Somehow bringing drinks to his friends didn’t fit into her long-term ideas.

Dave tucked a piece of hair behind her ear and his fingers lingered on her neck. “Is this okay? Should I have taken them somewhere else?”

Sabine didn’t know how to respond. The thought of someone else bringing him drinks and getting hugs from Max and Leslie left her feeling ugly inside.

Jealousy, she realized. That’s what she felt.

Ew. No.

“I just wanted to see you and I knew you were working tonight.” He dropped his hand, but his eyes stayed, searching her expression.

Oh.

“I just wish we could have a conversation where one of us wasn’t at work,” she said, telling the truth.

He nodded solemnly. “Can I make sure you get home tonight?”
