“He can be, yeah,” Dave agreed. “He’s just been in love with you since…”

“Sure.” Hannah rolled her eyes.

“Right. I forget how annoying you find it.”

“Find what?”

“Being adored.”

“Hey, I’m trying to make a miracle over here and you’re not helping!” Piper exclaimed, interrupting their conversation. Her bright blue eyes flashed at them dangerously. “Leave this room now or I will tell Johnny you were flirting with Hannah.”

Dave dropped his mouth open. “You wouldn’t dare.”

Piper’s lips flattened.

“Alright, I’m going.” He took his little cup and headed for the door. Hannah followed.

Shawn’s phone rang. He glanced at the screen and started to go the opposite way down the hall. “I gotta take this.”

They walked down to the control room where they’d mixed his last album and sat on the couches there. Johnny had headphones on and was messing with the switches on the board.

“So, you got Piper a tutor?” Dave asked, his mind bouncing back to the newcomer. “How’s that working out?”

Hannah wagged her head back and forth. “Piper doesn’t like that she can’t play basketball until her grades are back up. And I don’t know shit about English so I couldn’t help her.”

“And you trust her? The teacher?” Dave had already forgotten her name. Big surprise.

“She’s nice. A little dorky. Great references. Quinn doesn’t trust her, but Alex does so I went with it.”

Quinn was their “landlord” and also the CEO of his soon to be full-time security.

He didn’t know Alex. And he hadn’t met either one yet.

Hannah must’ve sensed the questions in his mind. “You’ll meet them on Monday.”

He sighed and sank back in the couch.

For the first time in weeks, he relaxed.

He finally felt like he was in a place that wasn’t about to crush him at any moment.

The people here weren’t trying to get something out of him, or expect the impossible, or even misunderstand his intentions.

This was good.

This was right.

No more girlfriends, no more distractions.

He could make his silly songs and just be…happy.
