He closed the door to the loft behind him and André caught him in the entry.

“Hey, I know my being here last night wasn’t…” he made a face and shook his head. “I shouldn’t have gotten that drunk.”

Dave gripped his shoulder. “No, it’s fine. We’ve all tied one on.”

André dipped his chin but he still looked sheepish.

“Still, thanks for not kicking me out.”

Dave snorted. “Don’t be ridiculous. You’re her family. You’d have to be a way bigger douchebag to get me to kick you out.”

André smirked.

“What are you two doing over there?” Sabine said when she found them. “C’mon. I want to unwrap presents.”

They joined her in the living room, and Sabine passed out the small bundle of gifts that she’d tucked under the tree. One for André and one for Dave.

Dave handed her the shirt box that he’d wrapped in the only paper he could find. Which happened to be “Happy Birthday” paper he’d found tucked in a drawer at the studio.

She shook her head and smirked when she took the package from him.

He loved the sparkle in her eyes that said she thought he was funny.

He was going to amuse the hell out of her for the rest of her life.

André opened his and it was a very nice wool sweater and a bowtie that had dinosaurs on it.

Dave opened his and time stopped.

He couldn’t picture certain things about the future. It was a mystery to him and probably always would be. But every once in a while, the universe would stop moving and an image would pass him. Little glimpses of whatmightbe in his future.

When he’d lifted the lid and it revealed a basketball jersey, it happened.

He pulled the jersey out and it unfolded so he could see all of it.

It was white with black letters and numbers. The front had a yellow sun emblem on it and the number one. The back also had the number one and the name said “SUPERSTAR.”

And in his mind, he saw himself playing basketball with someone much smaller than him. A child. He couldn’t see their face, but the jersey matched his and the number was three.

He looked at Sabine and his nose began to burn.

“This is perfect. Thank you.”

She smiled bright even though her eyes shone with her own tears. Did she know what he’d seen?

Of course not.

But he wouldn’t have been surprised if he found out she had.

She was a remarkable woman, and he was pretty sure he hadn’t even come close to discovering all of her talents.

He gestured for her to open her gift.

She pulled the top off and immediately started giggling.

“Oh my god, I love it.” The box fell to the floor and she held up the black cardigan.

He grinned when he saw her hold it to her torso and lovingly touch the buttons he’d had custom made for her.
