“Maybe I’m not meant to be a scholar,” Piper suggested looking down her nose at her laptop.

Before Sabine could reply, Dave spoke up.

“What are you meant to be?” he asked, sincere curiosity lighting up his features.

“I am meant to wreak havoc on the basketball court,” Piper replied with smug self-assuredness.

Dave barked a laugh that had Piper shifting into a begrudging smile. Sabine narrowed her eyes at the both of them.

“That’s a basketball reference, isn’t it?” Sabine asked.

Piper shook her head at her, disappointment dripping from her expression.

But Dave gave her an understanding smile, and she again noticed the deep blue shade of his eyes.

Oh, he had nice eyes.

The kind of eyes a person could curl up and take a nap in.

Wait? Who said that?

“It’s a commercial from the 90s. I’ll show it to you some time.”

Her brain paused on his statement at the same time he shot her a wink.

It wasn’t the wink. It was the solid four second eye contact they shared immediately after.

Which caused a full system reboot.

A wink is like a wave. It’s usually followed by the person walking away. It’s a jaunty little farewell. It’s cute and spunky andmeaningless.

But he didn’t immediately turn away.

He held her eyes for four whole seconds. As if he were waiting for her to agree or respond.

Which she could not.

Because a full system reboot was in progress.

Later, she was going to blame his nappable eyes. They were soooo soft.

Maybe this was what those vloggers were talking about. Maybe he was stealthy with his charm. Maybe it snuck up on you and caught you unprepared. Maybe the adorable dorkiness was just an act.

Maybe it was all Jedi mind tricks.

“Sabine.”

“What?” she replied, blinking rapidly and sitting up straighter.

She refocused on Piper.

Piper stared at her and one side of her mouth came up high. “You weren’t listening.”

“What? Yes, I was,” Sabine denied. “I was totally listening.”

Sabine glanced around the lounge. Dave was gone.

How had she missed him leaving?
