She held her breath and swallowed hard. Just the idea of him being hers made her face get hot.

Oh no.

Dave’s phone rang and she jumped.

He pulled it out of his robe pocket and held the screen for her to see.

It was his friend Max facetiming him.

“Should I pause it?” she asked, already reaching for the remote.

“Yeah.” He swiped to answer. “Hey.”

“Where are you and who are you with?” Max asked and it made Sabine smile. She hadn’t seen him since the night they’d met and she’d saved him from choking on a chicken wing.

“I am with Sabine and we are watching Star Wars.” He turned the phone so Max could see her.

“Hello, gorgeous,” Max said brusquely. “You look amazing as usual. Have you two been out tonight at all?”

The tense tone of Max’s question put Sabine on alert.

Dave sat up and leaned forward. “No. I came over about five-ish and we haven’t gone anywhere.”

“Good.” Max sounded relieved. “Just do me a favor and keep doing that.”

Dave chuckled and chewed on the side of his thumb. “You wanna tell me what’s going on?”

“Not really. As long as you’re in a safe place and you’re not, I don’t know, at a hockey game or anything.”

Hockey game?

Sabine and Dave frowned at each other in unison.

“I’ll be in town tomorrow and I’ll explain more then,” Max said. “Hope to see you again too, Sabine.”

And then he hung up.

Sabine waited for an explanation but Dave just put his phone down on the ottoman and relaxed back onto the sofa.

“Is that a normal conversation with Max?” she asked.

He shrugged. “For the most part.”

“You’re not curious what’s happening that he’s adamant you not be a part of?”

Dave sent her a lopsided smile. “I’m always curious. It’s my nature. But there are a few things I try not to stress out about. I let Max do that.”

She nodded and pressed play again.

After a minute she tugged out her own phone. “I’m too curious to not at least do a search.”

He put the popcorn bowl on the ottoman by his phone and leaned an elbow onto the cushion to be closer to her. She obliged by leaning his direction and holding her phone so he could see.

She began typing in Dave but he stopped her.

“Sunshine,” he said. “No one really calls me by my actual name.”

She glanced at him and corrected her search: Sunshine Capone + hockey
